A recent injunction from a federal judge in Colorado opened the door for all college athletes who graduated high school in 2022 to receive a fifth season of eligibility. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey, however, is urging caution to league members.
In a memo sent to member schools, Sankey called the situation involving players who recently gained eligibility "highly dynamic," according to an Associated Press report. He urged SEC teams to abide by current NCAA rules and interpretations until being instructed otherwise, and he said school compliance offices should work with the league before adding players affected by the ruling.
“Recent court rulings should not be interpreted as creating broader eligibility relief beyond the scope of the applicable orders,” Sankey wrote, per the AP. “In addition, SEC eligibility rules, including those relating to intraconference transfers, remain in effect until fully or individually waived, or the rule is changed.”
Part of Sankey's concern likely stems from the NCAA's appeal of the Colorado injunction, leaving the status of affected athletes in limbo for the time being. Still, that hasn't stopped multiple SEC schools from adding basketball players who were granted a fifth year, as Tennessee added Vanderbilt transfer Jalen Washington, while LSU received a commitment from former UCLA guard Skyy Clark.
