After 14 seasons and more than 200 wins, Mark DeCarli has stepped down as Greencastle-Antrim softball coach.

DeCarli resigned last week shortly after his team’s elimination in the first round of the Class 5A state tournament, though he says it’s been on his mind for a long time.

“It’s been a decision that’s been going through my head for about two years now,” he told the Public Opinion. “I’ve been going back and forth with it. This year, I felt it was the right thing to do. It was time to put myself first and take care of my health and do some things just for me. It’s time for someone else to take over and continue the winning ways.”

That someone will have big shoes to fill.

In his 14 seasons, DeCarli compiled a 211-84 record. Under his leadership, the Blue Devils won a District 3 championship in 2013, as well as nine division titles and a Mid-Penn Conference championship. DeCarli earned seven Coach of the Year awards and guided his team to the 2025 5A state championship game.

DeCarli considered stepping away a year ago, but with a strong group coming back, he felt the need to see it through.

“I thought last year was definitely going to be it, but after the historic run to the state championship [game], I felt I owed it to the girls to come back and give it another shot.

“It didn’t get off to a very good start this year with illness, then dropping two early divsion games, but I can’t say enough about how the girls fought, coming back to winning the division outright, I couldn’t be more proud of them.”

DeCarli spoke to the Public Opinion the day the G-A baseball team earned its spot in the state final, the game DeCarli took his softball team to last year and called the highlight of his career.

“That was so special,” he said. “Everyone should get an opportunity to be in that game. Once you’re there, there’s nothing else like it.”

DeCarli has been a teacher in the system for 27 years and will remain in that role.
