Green Says Offense Should Be in Top 5

WR Anquan Boldin catches a screen pass in practice.

The Arizona Cardinals continued their team organized workout with Monday’s mid-morning practice and the offense, according to Head Coach Dennis Green, has a new goal in mind.

Green told media that he expects his offense to be in the top five in the NFL this season and that after studying stats on his team over the past four years, clearly there is a long way to go.

“They haven’t been a good scoring offense, a good rushing offense, nor first downs, those are all the things I’ve looked at for four years, so when I say we are going to be top five in offense, I clearly understand how far we’ve got to go,” pointed out a candid Green.

The Cardinals offense ranked 27th in the NFL last season in total offense, but Green argues that the Cardinals have enough talent to make that leap from the bottom to the top.

“I want the players to understand how far we have to achieve and I think we have the players that can do that,” stated Green. “I don’t think anybody would disagree we’ve got the receivers to do it. I think most people would feel we’ve got the backs to do it. I think the guys who have to prove themselves are the quarterback, who I’m convinced of, and the offensive line. We’ve got to get all five of those groups, the backs, receivers, quarterback, line and tight ends all working together. I think we have the ability, but the performance over the last four years just has not been good at all and that is something we don’t want to happen to us.”

Backup quarterback Shaun King says the offense is up for the challenge set by Green.

“If you look at all the teams around the NFL who are successful, they are successful because that is what they strive to be,” he explained. “They set their goals high and they put in the work to get there. We play in a league where you get what you deserve and if Coach sets those high and lofty goals for us, then it is up to us to get to that level. Having goals like that doesn’t allow you to become complacent. It is tough to be a top five offense but I think having that goal is good for the guys, keeps everyone focused and prevents anyone from slacking off.”

Injury News

Cornerback Duane Starks (knee) returned to practice for individual work.

Running back Josh Scobey (hamstring), linebacker Levar Fisher (knee), cornerback Renaldo Hill (wrist), and receiver Nate Poole (back) did not practice.

"WR Anquan Boldin catches a screen pass in practice."

You mean we are actually going to practice and use the screen pass. Amazing.
I think it was a foreign language to Sullivan.

"Cornerback Duane Starks (knee) returned to practice for individual work. "

He will be ready to go this year, just a gut feeling.

One more thing, you can never say Green is not a confident man.

Question: Who is #30 and why does it look like he can't get around a guy not even trying to block him?

I'm all for optimism.......but everytime Green sets these type of goals, I wonder........ we are not only playoff bound, but now are a top five offense.........if he can get the players to pull this off, he'll be touted as the coach of the century.....Lombardi who?

I don't know. I read this as saying "We're going to be a top 5 offense... But we'll be pretty happy with Top 10 or 12." Honestly, that's something that I think they'll be happy with as something to build on for 2005 with a new franchise running back.

Besides, a Top 5 offense doesn't matter if you can't stop anyone. Just ask the 2002 Chiefs.

k9,

I suspect you are right.....best tell the team that they can become a top five unit, secretly being prepared to accept, say a top ten......I wonder what motivational guru Green most emulates?

Or the Vikings for that matter :D

He's just verbally challenging his guys. We won't be in the top 5, at least not this year. I have no problem with Green talking like a winner. Someone has to raise their expectations.

Absolutely. This is a lot better than the "We're going to win some games" bromides that we're used to hearing from Mac & Co.

Starks actually did the one on one coverage drills against the WR's. He moved around with no problems or hesitation and batted a few balls away. They did hold him out of team drills such as 11 on 11 for precautionary reasons.

The key is that he is backpedaling and cutting with no problems.

Top 5 how? Yards, or scoring?

Yards are overrated give me scoring everytime.

I gotta admit it's nice to have a coach lay out expectations instead of just hearing stuff like we're going to "smoke people" and then watch the same old predictable stuff.

I still shudder at how bad the first 4 weeks would have been LAST year if Josh had been our QB completely raw out there with Sullivan unable to get plays in and the WR's still not sure where to line up. As badly as Blake finished I think he deserves some credit for having to deal with all that nonsense, and Emmitt too(remember the timeouts he called when he realized Blake was too involved in setting the players and the clock was about to expire?).

It will be so nice to see an offense that has a chance to succeed because the players are prepared, and a coach who won't tolerate mediocrity.

I hope you are wrong. Starks is a very important key to any sucess we have this year. If he wants to play in 05 he better be better in 04.

FYI the Cards ranking in scoring offense under Tobin/McGinnis:

22,25,15*,30,29,20,29,32nd.

Was even worse on the other side:

26,25,24,27,30,22,29,32 - The good old break but don't bend defense.

*1998 of course
