Grayson County prevailed against No. 2 Daviess County 68-64 on Tuesday evening in an epic 3rd Region showdown at the DC gym. The two prolific squads entered this game with a combined 24-0 record against 3rd Region opponents.
“Grayson rebounded well, took good shots, and got in the paint,” Daviess County head coach Neil Hayden said. “There were a lot of stats that were even, but they almost doubled us in assists, and I think they moved the ball better than we did. They are a really good team that’s hard to guard.”
Daviess County went to 22-6, 13-1 3rd Region.
The Cougars (19-6, 12-0 3rd Region) win their third game in six days after previously dropping two contests earlier this month.
“This game gives us confidence,” Grayson County head coach Travis Johnston said. “We had a layoff (in late January) and we weren’t playing very well coming out of that. It was good for us to get our confidence back heading into the district tournament.”
Grayson County’s Caden Gaither ripped away a steal and layed it in on the other end to begin the contest. With 3:42 remaining in the quarter, Jonathan Moss fired a cross-court pass to Lemontae Ratcliff for a corner three. DeAaron Watkins’ dunk polished off 10-0 Panther run which forced a Grayson County timeout with 2:25 left. DC led the Cougars 18-13 at the end of the first quarter.
Spencer Langdon opened the second quarter with a layup for the Cougars, but Moss fired right back with a pull-up jumper of his own. Later in the quarter, Watkins recorded a block which immediately resulted in a three-pointer from Michael Acton.
Grayson County’s Jack Logsdon drilled a deep three, his second of the quarter, to cut the deficit to just one point. The Cougars regained the lead on the next possession, going up 26-25 with 3:22 remaining. After the two squads traded buckets back-and-forth, Moss hit a fadeaway jumper with under a minute left to give DC a 33-32 halftime lead.
Grayson’s Jagger Mardis sank a three to go up 39-35 just over two minutes into the second half. After Grayson County extended their lead to eight, Ratcliff made his third triple of the game at the 2:30 mark to slow down the Cougars. Gaither made a late three-pointer to give Grayson a 50-43 third quarter lead after winning the quarter 18-10.
Brody Armstrong scored four points in the paint to begin the final quarter for the Cougars. Gaither rolled through the paint for a driving dunk to extend the lead to 56-49 with 4:18 left. Moss nailed a deep three at the 2:58 mark, cutting the deficit to four. Armstrong responded with a huge three-pointer just over a minute later to make the score 61-54. Mardis made an impressive acrobatic layup late in the game to hold off the Panthers’ late push.
Moss was in attack mode in the fourth, scoring 16 of the Panthers’ 21 points. He led all scorers with 29 points and six assists.
“Jonathan can get a shot off in a lot of ways,” Hayden said. “We are better when the ball is in his hands. He gets up for big games, and he had a good fourth quarter.”
Logsdon led the Cougars in scoring with 19 points. Armstrong recorded 17 points, seven of those coming in the final period. Gaither finished with 15 points while Langdon added 12.
Behind Moss, Acton scored 16 points and Ratcliff added 12 on an impressive shooting night (3 of 4 on 3-pointers).
This concludes the regular season for the Panthers, as they are set to face Owensboro next Tuesday night at DCHS at 7 p.m. in the first round of the 9th district tournament. Grayson faces Hancock County at home on Friday night at 7:30 pm in their final regular season matchup.
