Does Kevin Towers get extended if the DBacks miss the playoffs? I am guessing he does not get extended if they end up .500 or worse but what if they win 85 games but miss the playoffs because the Dodgers or Giants win over 90 and they just miss a wild card game? Does KT stay with the org?

Great question...

If your asked me before the offseason what our 3 biggest needs were I would have said

1. Bower bat in a corner OF spot
2. Ace
3. Closer
4. Lead off hitter (can Owings be this guy?)

We're half way or more there

Not sure Owings will get enough playing time? I think Pollack might have a chance to develop into a legit lead off hitter... Otherwise, we really don't have a pure lead off guy.

Yeah, even teams that have an Ace have "Ace" at the top of their list.
Maybe a pitcher we already have will elevate his game to the "Ace" level.

Obviously everyone hopes Bradley is our Ace in waiting... I think he's still a full year away from making an impact on this team.
So, IMHO, that leaves Corbin as our best shot at becoming a legit #1...

No Tanaka = F

No ace, no way to catch the Dodgers. But that extra bat will sure help us improve our #5 offense (runs scored).

Hey, anytime you can dump not one, but two highly touted prospect for a guy who hit .222 with runners in scoring position... and them claim it was done to our supposedly lack luster offense... you gotta do it.

That did not include Holmberg. But when your GM is dumping virtually his entire farm system I can see how you might start getting the moves mixed up.

My grade

I would say an A- or A because we picked up a good power hitter and great closer with potentiol to be one of the top closers in baseball and with all these trades it shows other teams we are willing to deal. And I understand we also lost some great players like eaton Skaggs and Davidson but I feel we will get a good spot in the MLB draft this year so we could make up for lost prospects there

D for disastrous asset management which has been pretty well covered elsewhere.

I vote "C" because the biggest need was a legit #1 SP and they have not and are looking like they will not get that piece.

Trumbo was a so-so acquisition, if he can hit .270 for the year then it will upgrade to a good acquisition. Just hope he doesn't become Mark Reynolds 2.0 (sub .250 BA & 150K+).

Reed needs to save at least 30 games to justify the acquisition. I know that is a lofty expectation but this team cannot afford bringing in mediocre bullpen guys at the expense of prospects.

@ overseascardman getting reed won't only be good if he does good this year he is still only 24 so we can keep him till he's 35 so even of he's a great player for like 4 seasons that is still a good trade

Not sure about that. If Matt Davidson hits 20-25 HR's this year for CHI then this was not a good trade unless Reed has a good year. Remember, Davidson is only 22 so he is actually younger and under club control longer than Reed.

20-25 dingers? That's it? What about RBI? OBP? Batting Average??

Didn't you hear? The season of gritty players is over. Now it's back to 'how many home runs did he hit?' :)

Be prepared to look up in the sky to see how high the popups go. It is infectious. 'Might as well have brought back Reynolds or Young. Ouch, it hurts just to say that.

I have advocated a power hitter batting cleanup to protect Goldy, but a lefty and not one with an on-base percent you'd expect from a backup Catcher. But that's a different thread.
