The reigning National Women's Soccer League champion Gotham FC will make Etihad Park in Queens its permanent home beginning in 2028.

The new soccer-specific stadium, scheduled to open in spring 2027, will become the first venue built specifically for soccer in New York City. It also will serve as the home of Major League Soccer's New York City FC.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani and Gotham FC officials announced the move Tuesday during a news conference in New York City.

Gotham FC, the 2023 NWSL champion, currently splits its operations between New Jersey and New York. The club trains in Whippany, New Jersey, and plays its home matches at Red Bull Arena in Harrison, New Jersey.

New York City FC will begin playing at Etihad Park with the start of the 2027 MLS season after the stadium opens in spring 2027. Gotham FC will follow, making the stadium its permanent home beginning with the 2028 NWSL season.

Etihad Park is being built next to Citi Field in Queens.

The 25,000-seat stadium will include dedicated facilities for Gotham FC, including its own locker room and retail space.

Beyond MLS and NWSL matches, Etihad Park is expected to host major international soccer events, including men's and women's soccer competitions during the 2028 Summer Olympics.

Officials celebrate move

"New York State is home to some of the world's greatest sports teams, and we couldn't be more excited to officially add the reigning NWSL Champions, Gotham FC, to our ranks," Hochul said.
