Rodolfo Duran hit a monster one-out 432-foot two-run home run to left-center field to give the San Diego Padres a 4-1 lead over the Baltimore Orioles, which later proved to be the game-winner as the Padres beat the Orioles 5-2 to win the game and the series. Duran hit his second home run in as many days filling in for catcher Freddy Fermin who landed on the seven-day concussion IL after being hit by a bounced pitch from Yuki Matsui on Saturday. Duran plated the first run for San Diego in the top of the second inning with a ground ball through the middle of the infield that deflected off the second base bag and bounced over the Baltimore second baseman and landed in shallow right field. Samad Taylor scored and Duran hustled into second base to give the Padres a 1-0 lead. Fernando Tatis Jr. followed Duran and hit an RBI-single to center field, which scored Duran and gave San Diego a two-run lead.

The Padres were able to give closer Mason Miller some additional run support — not that he needed it — taking advantage of three Orioles errors in the top of the ninth. Tatis hit a line drive to right field with Will Wagner on third base for the second out of the inning. Wagner tagged up and slid into home and was initially called out. After a San Diego challenge the call was overturned and Wagner was called safe to put the Padres ahead, 5-2.

Walker Buehler started the game for the Padres and allowed just one run, which came on a solo home run from Jeremiah Jackson to lead off the bottom of the fifth inning to make the score, 2-1. Buehler finished his outing with the one run allowed on six hits with no walks and five strikeouts over five innings. Bradgley Rodriguez, Jason Adam and Adrian Morejon combined to cover 2.3 innings allowing one run on four hits with one walk and two strikeouts. Miller came into the game with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning and finished the eighth with a strikeout before working a scoreless ninth to get the save and the win.

San Diego starts a three-game series against the St. Louis Cardinals today at 4:45 p.m. at Busch Stadium.

Padres News:

  • Fernando Tatis Jr. started his career as a shortstop, moved to right field where he became a two-time Platinum Glove Award-winner and now he has played a bulk of the 2026 season at second base with Jake Cronenworth still working to get back from the injured list. Thomas Conroy of Gaslamp Ball thinks it is time for manager Craig Stammen to pick a position for Tatis so the team can plan for the future.
