Dec. 16—Neuqua Valley had one of the breakout freshmen in the state last season in Cole Kelly. The 6-6 wing received his first scholarship offer — from Illinois — before playing a single game for the Wildcats.
Kelly went on to earn News-Gazette All-State First Team honors after averaging 18.5 points, 9.6 rebounds and 2.5 assists during his freshman season. The offer from Illinois was followed by offers from DePaul, Drake, Nebraska, Missouri and Iowa.
Now, Neuqua Valley arguably has the breakout junior in the state. It's a strong in-state class headlined by Jaxson Davis and Illinois commit Quinton Kitt (plus Davion Thompson and Devin Cleveland who transferred out), but Mason Martin has played his way into the conversation.
Martin, who made 11 three-pointers and scored 41 points earlier this season against West Aurora, received an offer from Illinois on Sunday with Zach Hamer leading his recruitment. The 6-5 guard also as an offer from Holy Cross.
