Aug. 8—Former Gonzaga pitcher Alek Jacob's family was one of many to lose their Spokane home in the Old Trails fire last weekend.
Jacob, a North Central High graduate who is with the San Diego Padres organization, posted to his private Instagram account showing the remnants of his childhood home. Jacob's family members and their pets are safe, "but they lost everything," according to a report on X from Annie Heilbrunn of the San Diego-Union Tribune.
A GoFundMe has been set up by a friend of the Jacob family. According to the post, the family lived there for 24 years and the home doubled as an animal foster care.
As of Friday evening, the GoFundMe has raised over $29,000.
Jacob is currently pitching for Triple-A El Paso. He has appeared in three games this year for the Padres and has 42 career big-league appearances, all with San Diego, since making his MLB debut in 2023.
Colorado Rockies outfielder Troy Johnston told the Denver Gazette earlier this week that his grandfather, who is in hospice care, and aunt were evacuated due to the Spokane fires.
"It's where I spent a lot of my childhood," Johnston told the paper. "My grandparents lived up in Colville. They lived on a farm with horses, cows, pigs, and all those kinds of animals. That side of Washington is very special to me because I remember it a lot from my childhood."
"Now I'm trying to help out in whatever way I can," added Johnston, who also mentioned Jacob, his close friend and former GU teammate.
Former Zags and Spokane Indians pitcher Gabriel Hughes, who also plays for the Rockies, told the Gazette it's been difficult to see the images coming out of Spokane.
"It's hard to put into words how emotional it is seeing people's houses and lives just upended like that," Hughes said.
