The Memphis Grizzlies landed big man Quinten Post this week, reaching an agreement with him in restricted free agency that the Golden State Warriors decided not to match.
Post, 26, now switches teams for the first time in his NBA career. It's the end of a small era, as he was drafted by the Warriors in 2024 and spent his first two seasons in the league with them.
After losing Post to Memphis, Golden State took to social media and sent him a parting message.
The Warriors did a nice job of identifying Post as a player worth rolling the dice on in the second round of the 2024 NBA Draft. He didn't come off the board until the No. 52 overall pick, yet he's had more success than many players who were selected ahead of him.
As a rookie, he averaged 8.1 points, 3.5 rebounds and 1.3 assists per game while shooting 44.9 percent from the field and 40.8 percent from beyond the arc. That led to him getting playoff minutes in his debut season.
As a sophomore, his role expanded, and he averaged 7.7 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game while shooting 44.0 percent from the field and 33.6 percent from deep.
The Boston College product now joins a Grizzlies team that just keeps getting younger and is entering a new era headlined by the recent selection of incoming rookie Cameron Boozer. Boozer figures to become the new face of the franchise if all goes to plan, and Post may get a chance to play a key role in the effort to get Memphis back to contention.
The deal Post signed with Memphis is worth $30 million over three years, though only the first year of the deal is fully guaranteed, and some of the money is tied to incentives. The way the Grizzlies structured the offer sheet might have discouraged the Warriors from matching the offer. It was a clever approach from Memphis.
The 7-footer is certainly a loss for the Warriors, who played him in 109 games over the last two seasons and started him 49 times (without even including any of his playoff appearances). But the Grizzlies are certainly hoping that they're getting into the Post game at the right time, as he could still reach another level with more NBA experience.
As the Grizzlies enter an intriguing 2026-27 season, Post's debut campaign with the team will be a storyline to watch.
