Athletes and superstitions go hand in hand.
That's especially true this year in the NHL both for the Vegas Golden Knights and the Carolina Hurricanes.
Each year, fans watch to see if the conference champions claim their respective trophy for that series victory. It's about a 50-50 split.
Some don't want to touch that trophy. They only want to hoist the Stanley Cup.
Others figure it can't hurt to celebrate that victory en route to hopefully getting another.
This season, neither the Golden Knights nor the Hurricanes touched their conference title trophy.
And because social media is an amazing place, we have data on what this might mean:

There doesn't appear to be a ton of correlation in that chart, which makes sense. It's superstition, not correlation.
We can see that the Golden Knights celebrated their first conference title, then lost the Stanley Cup, before not touching the trophy more recently and winning the Stanley Cup.
That's actually true two decades back for the Hurricanes, too, who lost after touching the conference title trophy but then won after avoiding it.
But in this case, both teams followed the same superstition track, and they can't both hoist the Cup, so something's gotta give.
