Jonas Vingegaard initially wasn't expecting to challenge for the victory in Stage 9 of the Giro d’Italia 2026, but he took advantage of an opportunity in the final kilometer to collect his second win in three days and the 50th of his professional career.
The pre-race favorite pulled away from Felix Gall on the homestretch of the summit finish and won the stage by 12 seconds.
Though he's still more than two minutes behind Afonso Eulálio in the battle for the pink leader's jersey, he shaved almost a minute off the deficit and heads into Tuesday's individual time trial hoping his experience will close the gap even further. Sunday's win also helped Vingegaard increase his lead in the King of the Mountains race to 51 points over Diego Sevilla.
After a rest day Monday, Stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia 2026 marks the lone time trial of the year.
The riders will fly down the ramp one at a time and race 42 kilometers from Viareggio to *****, ultimately traveling the same distance they did across two time trials in 2025 - 13.7 kilometers in Stage 2 and 28.6 kilometers in Stage 10.
Some competitors are time-trial specialists, so for those hoping to contend for the pink jersey in 2026, it is important not to lose time on this stage.
In the General Classification, Eulálio leads Vingegaard by 2 minutes, 24 seconds, while Gall is another 35 seconds back. Past Giro winner Jai Hindley is fourth (4:32), and Christian Scaroni is fifth (4:43).
Stage 10 is scheduled to begin Tuesday at 7 a.m. Eastern and should conclude around 11:15 a.m. EDT.
For viewers in Canada, FloBikes coverage of Stage 10 will begin at 7:05 a.m. Eastern.
Here’s what to know about Stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia 2026, the year's only time trial. This ride will take the field on a flat 42-kilometer journey from Viareggio to *****:
Stage 10 of the Giro d'Italia 2026 is the only time trial of this year's event. It will be a flat and fast journey from Viareggio to *****. The 42 kilometers should be relatively scenic, as it will bring them along the coastline of the Tyrrhenian Sea and finish on the seafront. The final kilometers are relatively straight, though there are a couple of bends, before things straighten out again.
This time trial is much longer than either of the two in the 2025 race - 13.7 kilometers in Stage 2 and 28.6 kilometers in Stage 10. The winners were Joshua Tarling and Daan Hoole.
Heading into Stage 10, expect some familiar names to contend for this one. Vine should be back, Italian Filippo Ganna could be a factor and first-time Giro participant Jonas Vingegaard is known to excel in a time trial.
If Viareggio sounds familiar, that's because Stage 11 of the 2025 Giro started there.
Viareggio is on the coast of Tuscany and overlooks the Ligurian Sea. The city is modern and is a major tourist destination for those seeking a vacation in an elegant resort or heading to town for a special event.
***** embodies the long history of many cities and towns in the region, boasting an historic center of medieval influence that combines with a recent modernization that makes ***** tourist-friendly, too.
Stage 10 of the Giro d’Italia 2026 is 42 kilometers, or approximately 26.09 miles long.

Josh Tarling, a 21-year-old from Great Britain, came within seven seconds of sweeping the time trials at the Giro d'Italia 2025.
Tarling, of Ineos, is a time-trial specialist and finished the 13.7-kilometer circuit in Stage 2 in 16 minutes, 7 seconds, which was one second faster than all-around star Primoz Roglic and three seconds faster than Jay Vine.
Tarling became the youngest rider to win a time trial at the Giro, and he nearly doubled up in Stage 10, finishing 6.9 seconds behind Daan Hoole of the Netherlands, who completed the 28.6-kilometer ride in 32 minutes, 30 seconds.
By the time the overall leaders were ready for the time trial, rain was falling heavily on the course, so safety, rather than speed, became the priority.
In the GC standings, Isaac Del Toro lost 48 seconds of the lead he'd built, but he still ended the day with the pink jersey and a 25-second advantage on teammate Juan Ayuso.
Hoole had finished sixth in Stage 2 and had one other top-10 finish in 2025, a seventh-place effort in Stage 18. He finished 22 in the points race and 119th in the GC.
Tarling was forced to abandon the Giro in Stage 16.

Here’s the list for 2026:
At 32 years old, Great Britain’s Simon Yates made history at the Giro d’Italia, not because of his age, but because he won the race without winning any of the 21 stages. It was the first time that happened since Alberto Contador did so a decade earlier.
It was the second Grand Tour victory for Yates, who won the Vuelta a España in 2018, and it will be his last, as he announced his retirement seven months after winning the Giro.
Yates didn’t secure the coveted pink jersey until Stage 20, when he shot past Richard Carapaz and longtime leader Isaac Del Toro on the Colle delle Finistre climb, one of the most anticipated challenges on the cycling calendar. The same climb broke Yates in his attempt to win the Giro in 2018.
Del Toro, who had ridden in pink for 11 days, might have fallen short in his GC bid, but he became the first athlete from North America to win the Best Young Rider title.
Heading into Stage 20, Del Toro was 43 seconds ahead of Carapaz and 1 minute, 21 seconds in front of Yates. By the end of the day, Yates was nearly four minutes clear of Del Toro, with Carapaz another minute back.
In 2024, Tadej Pogacar won the Giro d’Italia in 2024 as part of a memorable season that saw him become the first rider since 1998 to win the Giro and the Tour de France in the same season.
He then added a win at the 2024 World Championships in Switzerland to became the first cyclist since 1987 to win the Giro, TDF and a world championship in the same season.
Gregor Brown reports on-site from the summit of Corno alle Scale after Jonas Vingegaard claimed his second mountain stage victory of the Giro d’Italia 2026.
The Danish favorite launched away from Felix Gall on the final climb at 1,400 meters altitude. Behind him, Portuguese rider Afonso Eulálio fought to defend the pink jersey.
