Jun. 1—After three straight years of disappointing finishes in the regional tournament, the Springboro High School girls lacrosse team finally broke through to the state Final Four.

The Panthers beat Kings Knights 12-11 on Thursday, May 28, to win their first regional championship in school history.

"We've been close the last few years, and to finally get to the regional final and win was nice," said Panthers coach Jamie Ling.

Springboro (17-5) lost in the regional semifinals each of the past three seasons. A year ago, the Panthers lost to Sycamore 15-12 in a regional semifinal game. In 2024, they fell to Walnut Hills 12-11 and fell to Mason 14-3 in 2023.

This year, Panthers senior Ashley Filburn had seven goals and sophomore Cam Walters, junior Grace Dresher and junior Mady Burns each added three as top-seeded Springboro beat Sycamore 18-8 on May 26, to advance to the Region 4 title game.

Filburn had a team-best five goals in the victory over Kings, which was a little too close for comfort, Ling said.

"We were up 12-8, and then kind of had a couple turnovers and (Kings) didn't quit," he said. "We were able to get the ball at the end and run out the clock, which was nice. We would've liked it to be not as close, but it's good to be still playing."

An even tougher task awaits in the state semifinals. Springboro will face perennial powerhouse Upper Arlington in a D-I state semifinal game at 7 p.m. Tuesday, June 2, at Mason High School.

The winner will face either Olentangy Liberty or Hudson in the state championship game at 1 p.m. Sunday, June 7, at Historic Crew Stadium in Columbus.

The Golden Bears are making their fifth straight trip to the state tournament and eighth appearance overall.

They've won four state titles (2017-2019 and 2023) and finished runner-up three times (2025, 2024 and 2022) since girls lacrosse became an OHSAA sponsored tournament in 2017. They lost to Olentangy Liberty 9-8 last season.

"They're the team in Ohio that everyone compares themselves to, and they're usually penciled in as Region 3 champ," Ling said. "It's nice to finally get a chance to play in the state semifinal."

The Golden Bears are 21-1 with their lone loss coming against Milton, Georgia, in the season opener on March 16. They enter the state semifinal on a 21-game winning streak.

Springboro is led by Filburn, a Kent State commit, who has 75 goals and 23 assists this season. Walters has 56 goals and 57 assists and leads the GWOC with 119 defensive controls.

Springboro played a tough schedule this year to prepare themselves for the postseason.

So far, it's paid off.

"We scheduled knowing we were going to have a good team, so we'd be ready when the pressure is on," Ling said."

The schedule included Upper Arlington, which beat the Panthers 14-3. They hope to make a better run at the Golden Bears this time around with a trip to the state final on the line.

"Everyone wants to challenge their team," Ling said. "It's one game where anything can happen, and we're excited to get our chance on Tuesday."
