Cohen Gill, with ties to two South Coast track clubs, was champion in the turbo javelin at the Pacific Northwest Regionals Junior Olympics track and field meet.
Gill, who is part of Coos County Youth Track and trains with Coastal Takeoff, won the event in the 8 and under age group in the regional meet near Seattle with a throw of 20.56 meters.
The top five finishers in each event qualified for the upcoming national meet, which is July 27-Aug. 2 at Cerritos College in California.
Gill also was sixth in the long jump (2.95) and 14th in the 200 (37.69 seconds).
Gill’s brother, Titus Gill, was one of several local athletes who qualified for the national meet in the high jump. Competing in the 9-10 age group, Gill cleared 1.15 meters to place fifth.
Titus Gill also was 11th in the 400 (1:13.55) and 12th in the 200 (32.37).
Competing for Coastal Takeoff, brothers Logan and Cooper Vinyard were second and third in the high jump in the 11-12 age group to qualify for the national meet for the fifth year in a row. Logan Vinyard cleared 1.47 meters and Cooper Vinyard cleared 1.37.
Kaiicen Turner, also competing for Coastal Takeoff, qualified for the national meet for the fourth year in a row, placing fourth in the long jump in the 11-12 age group with a leap of 4.86 meters.
Logan Vinyard was 10th (4.36) and Cooper Vinyard 12th (4.25).
Turner was eighth in the 100 (13.38) and ninth in the 200 (27.95).
Logan Vinyard was sixth in the shot put (9.38 meters) and Cooper Vinyard was ninth (8.38).
Also for Coastal Takeoff, Paige Johnson was fourth in the high jump in the 13-14 age group, clearing 1.45 meters. She also placed 12th in the long jump (4.28 meters).
Like the Vinyard brothers and Turner, Johnson is a past national meet qualifier and multi-time All-American.
Coos County Youth Track had another national qualifier, Addison Cutting, who placed third in the aero javelin in the 9-10 age group, with a throw of 21.16 meters.
Cutting just missed qualifying in the shot put, placing sixth (6.11 meters) in the 9-10 age group.
Coos County Youth Track’s Elizabeth Jurkowski was 15th in the 200 in the 11-12 age group (30.37). She was ninth in the long jump with a leap of 3.95 meters.
