With the start of Giants training camp fast approaching, we are breaking down each of their position groups, as they prepare for Year 1 under coach John Harbaugh.

The Giants report to camp next Tuesday in White Sulphur Springs, W.Va., and will hold their first practice a day later.

So far, our position breakdown series has covered the quarterback group.

Next up — running back.

• Top players: Cam Skattebo, Tyrone Tracy

• Backups: Devin Singletary, Eric Gray, Damon Bankston, Dante Miller, Patrick Ricard (fullback)

• Position battles to watch: Nothing major. It’ll be interesting to see how this new coaching staff divides the workload between Skattebo and Tracy, especially since these Giants figure to be a run-focused team. In terms of a third running back, Singletary isn’t a lock to have that job. Remember, Harbaugh’s old Baltimore buddy Ricard is now assured of a roster spot. So maybe Harbaugh goes with Skattebo, Tracy and Ricard in this room.

• On the roster bubble: Singletary definitely could be released after taking a pay cut this offseason to stick around (for now). Gray (a 2023 fifth-round draft pick) hasn’t made enough of an impact. He is now entering the final year of his rookie contract and is another cut candidate. Bankston and Miller both obviously are also on the roster bubble, with a chance to stick around on the practice squad.

• Training camp storylines: The big one is Skattebo’s health. He is coming off a serious ankle injury. But he showed signs of progress during the spring — and should be able to fully participate in camp practices at some point fairly soon. It would be a stunner if he isn’t ready for Week 1.

Of course, the Giants need him to stay healthy — during and after camp. So you can bet Harbaugh has talked to Skattebo about doing backflips in non-touchdown celebration settings. Skattebo did that at least twice this offseason. First, he landed one at Brian Burns’ charity softball game. Then he slipped and stumbled (but apparently wasn’t hurt) while trying to land a backflip at Fanatics Fest. Immature, pointless stuff overall.

• What happened in 2025: Entering the season, Tracy was the Giants’ top back, since he impressed as a fifth-round rookie in 2024 and passed Singletary on the depth chart. But Skattebo (a fourth-round rookie in 2025) quickly leapfrogged Tracy. Skattebo became a phenom, thanks to his physicality, relentless energy, crazy personality and production.

Then came that devastating ankle injury in Week 8 at the Eagles. It ended Skattebo’s terrific first NFL season, though he is expected to be 100% by Week 1 in 2026. Still, he offered the Giants just a small sample size to assess, as Harbaugh asks himself: Is Skattebo a true No. 1 back?

Skattebo finished 2025 with 410 rushing yards and five touchdowns over eight games, plus 207 receiving yards and two touchdowns. He has lots of dual-threat potential. That much is obvious.

For the 2026 season, the Giants are listed at +265 to reach the playoffs on FanDuel. Our complete FanDuel Sportsbook review makes it easy to figure out how to use their platform. For a closer look, view our Giants win total prediction in addition to other Giants futures bets.

So does Tracy, who played receiver in college. As a rookie, he totaled 1,123 yards and six touchdowns. Last year, he had 1,028 and four, as the Giants increased his workload after Skattebo’s injury.

• What must happen in 2026: Yes, Skattebo flashed potential as a rookie. But he isn’t yet proven over the long haul. So how much does Harbaugh believe in him as part of his long-term Giants plan? That question will sort itself out this season.

Remember, the Giants were interested in signing Kenneth Walker this offseason before the price got too high. And they might have drafted Jeremiyah Love if he fell to them at No. 5 instead of going to the Cardinals at No. 3.

Bottom line: Harbaugh wants an extremely strong running back room. Skattebo must show he can remain reliable (and healthy) enough to lead that group, especially given his contact-heavy playing style.

You have to wonder how sustainable that approach is over the course of an entire NFL season.
