The San Francisco Giants are suspending payment to outfielder Harrison Bader in the wake of his scooter accident that resulted in further injury to a left foot that was already suffering from plantar fasciitis, club president Buster Posey announced Friday.
The Giants' move indicates they believe Bader's late-night scooter accident puts him in violation of the uniform player contract, which typically forbids − or at least fails to protect the player from − potentially injurious activities such as playing basketball or skiing.
While the motorized scooter is a common mode of transportation for many ballplayers who live near stadiums, the circumstances of Bader's injury appeared to give the Giants cause to suspend his pay.
The San Francisco Police Department confirmed to news organizations that they responded to an incident involving a motorized scooter and another vehicle in the Marina District shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday morning. Bader, 32, was due to travel to Indianapolis to see a specialist for his plantar fasciitis.
The Giants initially announced that Bader's exam could not proceed due to the injury suffered in the accident. Yet after eyewitness accounts emerged in published reports in the Bay Area, they opted to suspend his pay.
"Over the weekend, Harrison Bader was involved in an accident that has delayed prior treatment timeline for plantar fasciitis and, unfortunately, his return to the field," Posey said in a statement released by the club. "We are still investigating the circumstances of the accident, but will be suspending payment to Harrison until he is able to resume performing services for the club."
Bader is in the first year of a two-year, $20.5 million contract with the Giants. He received a $6 million signing bonus and is being paid $4.5 million this season. He is due roughly $1.48 million for the remainder of the year.
Bader, also hampered by an earlier hamstring injury, has played in just 30 games this season, batting .170 with five home runs.
