The status of New York Giants wide receiver Malik Nabers for Week 1 of the 2026 NFL season remains up in the air.
Nabers suffered a torn ACL and meniscus in Week 4 last season and has been recovering ever since.
Recently, The Athletic’s Dan Duggan reported that Nabers had a second surgery to remove scar tissue, but the procedure isn’t expected to impact his recovery timeline.
“Giants WR Malik Nabers underwent a second surgery on his knee to remove scar tissue that was causing stiffness, according to sources,” Duggan reported. “This second surgery isn’t expected to impact Nabers’ recovery timeline.”
On Thursday, Giants head coach John Harbaugh touched on Nabers’ recovery and said the hope is that Nabers is ready for Week 1, which has been the hope all along.
However, Harbaugh isn’t making any promises.

“He’s in the middle of it,” Harbaugh said of Nabers’ rehab. “It’s such a hard thing. It’s an ACL and whatever else he had in that knee. Not a simple knee, so, he’s in the slog of it, the grind of it, I would say. So, he’s fighting through it. He’s here everyday, working hard at it.”
“Just impossible to predict. The goal is to start the season and get out there some time in training camp, that would be the goal, and we’ll see what happens. If he’s out there, great. If he’s not out there, great,” Harbaugh added. “We’ll be ready to go either way, but I know he’s fighting like crazy to do his best to be out there and he’s with the guys everyday.”
Harbaugh’s response makes it quite clear that nothing is set in stone.
At this point, if Nabers can just avoid the Physically Unable to Perform (PUP) list and make it back before Week 4, the Giants will be fortunate.

If Malik Nabers isn’t ready for the start of the season, the Giants are going to have a shaky wide receiver situation.
New York still has Darius Slayton and added Darnell Mooney and Calvin Austin in free agency and Malachi Fields in the 2026 NFL Draft. The Giants also added a good pass-catching tight end in Isaiah Likely.
That’s not exactly an inspiring wide receivers group and the Giants would be wise to add more help if there is even a chance Nabers won’t be good to go in Week 1.
New York has flirted with the idea of reuniting with Odell Beckham Jr. after the team brought him in for a workout and physical before the draft.
However, Beckham has declined considerably in recent years and didn’t even play in 2025, so he’s hardly an adequate solution for Big Blue.
