The MLB Trade Deadline is upon us, and the San Francisco Giants have some serious reflecting to do.
Arguably no team in baseball has been more disappointing than the Giants this season. Their 44-61 record is abysmal, to say the least, and they're a whopping 22.5 games back in the National League West.
If there was ever a time to sell, it's now. That said, they spent so much money to bring in guys like Rafael Devers and Willy Adames, the question is, who's going to want them in the first place?
In a recent article by The Athletic, Tim Britton placed the Giants in the lowest tier. While the Los Angeles Dodgers are in a tier labeled: World Series or bust, the Giants are stuck asking themselves "how much do we have to change?"
San Francisco has somehow managed to put themselves in a position where they're ranked No. 27 out of the 30 possible teams in the league. Britton believes that only the New York Mets, Kansas City Royals, and Los Angeles Angels have put themselves in a worse spot.
Overall, he placed these teams in Tier 7, a tier that questions just how much change these organizations are going to have to go through before they're ready to compete again.
"These are the teams engaging in introspection about how they got here and what they have to do to get out of it this winter," Britton wrote.
The senior writer noted "The San Francisco Giants' big spending has backfired," and that's an understatement. If somehow they're able to offload a few of these major contracts at the deadline, it would be a huge win for everyone involved. If not, they're stuck looking in the mirror at another worst possible scenario in 2027.
Luis Arraez is the Giants' shiny toy at the deadline as he's been unstoppable this year and is only under contract until the end of this season. Getting rid of him will be easy, because at this point the team simply hasn't put themselves in the conversation to logically give him a new, long-term deal.
After Arraez, there are a few pitching options, Robbie Ray specifically, that could be moved along with the likes of Adames or Devers. Making moves is going to be far easier said than done, but Buster Posey would set this team back years if he and the rest of the front office don't work some magic by August 3.
