It's not going to be easy, but the San Francisco Giants may have to move on from Logan Webb.
The 29-year-old has been on the team for eight seasons, but teams are expressing interest, and now is the time to get a deal done.
It's already been reported that San Francisco is willing to pay part of Robbie Ray's contract so they can move on from him, but the situation with Webb is entirely different.
Webb is in the midst of a $23 million season. He's set to make the same amount next year, but will earn a career-high $24 million in 2028. He'll be 31 years old by then and is set to become an unrestricted free agent in 2029.
According to USA TODAY's Bob Nightengale, the Houston Astros have expressed interest. Other teams have as well, but Nightengale failed to mention who. Ultimately, though, it's notable that more than one team is interested. If there was ever a time to make a deal, it's now.
Webb is earning ace money, and rightfully so, but this is a contract the team would greatly benefit from not having to pay these next two seasons. No one is quite sure if they would pay some of his salary for this season, as they plan on doing with Ray, but the chances of Ray being traded are far more than them moving on from Webb.
This season is already a lost cause, so what's stopping them from trading both? Webb has been pretty good this season with his 6-7 record and 3.93 ERA, but he's ran into some trouble during the month of July.
That said, Webb just cruised past the Milwaukee Brewers, so maybe things are once again trending in the right direction. He allowed just two earned runs in those six innings of work, a start that was a huge improvement from the 19 earned runs he allowed in his last four starts combined.
Obviously, San Francisco isn't going to be able to get someone like Yordan Alvarez in a trade, but the Astros would need to give the Giants some young, close-to-big-league-ready talent in order for a deal to be made.
Webb's contract isn't the worst one on the market, and Nightengale said teams "keep asking" the Giants about their ace. Keeping him certainly wouldn't hurt if they aren't going to get anything meaningful in return, but there's no better time than the present for this Giants team to have a complete refresh, and if that includes trading Webb, so be it.
