The New York Giants returned to East Rutherford, New Jersey, for Day 11 of training camp on Monday and immediately dealt with several notable absences that underscored the physical demands of a long summer.
Outside linebacker Abdul Carter sat out with a hand and finger injury, easily the most significant development of the afternoon. Head coach John Harbaugh described the issue as minor and said Carter is fine, leaving open the possibility he could return to practice as soon as Tuesday.
The second-year edge rusher has been one of the more consistent performers through the early stages of camp, making his absence the clear headline.
Starting center John Michael Schmitz also missed the session while working through the concussion protocol. Schmitz suffered the injury during Saturday’s practice and remains under evaluation as the team manages the situation carefully.
Wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster was held out because of a knee issue. Signed in June to a one-year contract, Smith-Schuster is fighting for a roster spot in a crowded receiver room that includes Odell Beckham Jr. and Braxton Berrios. He previously missed a practice last week with knee swelling, and every missed day only tightens the competition for the veteran who must prove he still belongs.
Linebacker Chauncey Golston left practice early after hitting his head on the ground and is being evaluated for a head injury, Harbaugh confirmed. Rookie right guard Francis Mauigoa was checked by trainers late in the session for what appeared to be a head or neck concern but finished practice and was cleared.
The string of absences reflects the cumulative toll of a demanding camp schedule as the Giants continue building toward the preseason.
