While the San Francisco Giants are in the midst of a lost season, they still want to see what they have in their major league talent. That includes catcher Daniel Susac, who was forced to leave Sunday’s game after fouling a pitch off his knee.
His X-rays ultimately came up negative as manager Tony Vitello stated Susac is dealing with a knee contusion, via Justice delos Santos of the Mercury News. The catcher will now be considered day-to-day.
While Susac was in a lot of pain, he ultimately stayed in to hit. He was eventually removed to get a better understanding of the injury. The Giants will still be paying close attention to the catcher as he works through his ailment. But San Francisco at least knows he isn’t dealing with a long-term issue.

As a Rule 5 draft selection, Susac has to remain on the roster for the entire 2026 season or else he would be offered back to the Athletics. That is incentive enough for San Francisco to keep him around. But the catcher have had plenty of flashes of brilliance as a rookie that have justified his roster spot.
Over his first 52 games at the major league level, Susac is hitting .247 with three home runs, 22 RBIs and two stolen bases. While he may not be Patrick Bailey behind the plate, he holds his own defensively as well. The fact San Francisco has opted to keep him all year shows they’re planning for him to have some sort of role in the future.
In the present, Susac is now trying to get past his knee injury. While a contusion isn’t a laughing matter, the both the catcher and the Giants will take it compared to far worse outcomes.
