SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. - The San Francisco Giants added to their outfield depth, signing outfielder Will Brennan to a one-year major league deal on Sunday.
Brennan, 28, will compete for an outfield job with the big league team and is a full go for the year despite undergoing Tommy John surgery in early June last year. It continues a trend of the Giants signing recently-injured free agents to their big league team, including Sam Hentges, Adrian Houser and Jason Foley - who won't return until at least mid-season.
Brennan, a former Cleveland Guardians outfielder, played just six games in 2025; in 2024 he batted .264 overall and .278 against right-handed pitching. He still has minor league options remaining, so he could be sent to Triple-A after camp.
"He's a left-handed bat, and it's a good bat, so hopefully it just gives us another option to look at as we look at the competition out there," general manager Zack Minasian said.
Brennan adds a left-handed-hitting option to a group competing for a fourth outfield job this spring that includes fellow lefty Drew Gilbert - who is close with manager Tony Vitello from their Tennessee days - Jerar Encarnacion and Grant McCray.
Non-roster invitees include Jared Oliva, 30, who last played in the majors for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 2021 and since bounced around the minor leagues for Pittsburgh, the Los Angeles Angels, Seattle Mariners and Milwaukee Brewers.
The Giants placed recently-signed reliever Rowan Wick on the 60-day injured list to make room for Brennan on the 40-man roster. Wick signed a one-year deal with a club option for 2027, essentially giving the Giants flexibility with that roster spot.
Wick, 33, will miss the entire 2026 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery in November, but international scouts were impressed by his performance with the Yokohama BayStars in Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball. He had a 1.13 ERA in 47⅔ innings out of the bullpen in 2025.
"We had some people who were really excited about what they saw with him overseas this year," Minasian said. "We had a scout who saw him and a lot of data to support that he would be a productive major league pitcher, but obviously after the surgery, not expecting him back this year. So as we got deeper into the offseason, felt like it was a chance worth taking to get him and have the option for next year."
