The San Francisco Giants made a series of roster moves on Wednesday, highlighted by the return of left-handed pitcher Reiver Sanmartin from the 60-day Injured List.
Sanmartin, who was claimed off waivers from the Cincinnati Reds during the offseason, has yet to appear in a game for San Francisco after suffering a hip flexor strain during spring training.
The injury was expected to sideline him for roughly three months, and his activation falls in line with that original timetable.
To create room on the active roster, the Giants optioned right-handed pitcher Tristan Beck to Triple-A Sacramento.
The 30-year-old Sanmartin brings major-league experience to the organization, having appeared in parts of five seasons with Cincinnati.
While his results with the Reds were inconsistent, he showed an ability to generate ground balls, a trait that could prove valuable as the Giants continue to navigate their pitching depth throughout the season.
The more notable move may have been the Giants' decision to designate outfielder Will Brennan for assignment.
Brennan joined the San Francisco Giants after being non-tendered by the Cleveland Guardians last offseason. The Giants signed him to a major-league contract and frequently moved him between the major-league roster and Triple-A Sacramento throughout the year.
Despite receiving several opportunities, Brennan struggled to establish himself at the big-league level. In limited action with the Giants, he managed just two hits in 23 plate appearances.
His larger major-league track record has followed a similar pattern as he has generally struggled to provide consistent offensive production.
While Brennan's major-league performance has lagged behind, his production in Triple-A has been far more encouraging.
He has consistently hit well at the level throughout his professional career and continued that trend this season with Sacramento.
However, the gap between his minor-league success and major-league production has remained a challenge. Brennan's profile as a contact-oriented hitter with speed and defensive versatility may still appeal to clubs seeking additional outfield depth.
Because he remains optionable, another organization could view him as a worthwhile depth addition capable of moving between Triple-A and the majors as needed.
Brennan now enters the waiver process, where the Giants will determine whether another club has interest in claiming or acquiring him.
If he clears waivers, then he would have the ability to reject an outright assignment and elect free agency.
However, doing so would require him to forfeit the remaining guaranteed money on his contract, making a return to the Giants organization a realistic possibility should he go unclaimed.
For now, San Francisco gains a fresh arm in Sanmartin while Brennan's future with the organization remains uncertain.
