When the New York Giants inked former Baltimore tight end Isaiah Likely to a three-year, $40 million deal in free agency earlier this month, many had questions.
The Giants already had a young stud tight end in Theo Johnson, so why pay so much for a player at a "non-need" position?
"Two tight ends out there that are pretty special, very special, talented players together. It's exciting," Giants head coach John Harbaugh told reporters at the NFC coaches' breakfast on Monday.
Harbaugh coached Likely for four seasons in Baltimore. He knows what Likely can bring to an offense.
"He's a playmaking football player," Harbaugh continued. "I have seen him in every kind of circumstance. So it's really a valuable thing to know players.
"He's got a big catch radius. He can make plays after he makes a catch. He can get upfield. He can make people miss. He can run people over. He's a very good perimeter blocker. You'll see that. That will be good for our run game."
Likely served as a TE2 in Baltimore behind three-time Pro Bowler Mark Andrews. The Ravens were always at the top of the league in rushing with the two-tight end set. The Giants hope to establish the same offense, and Likely will play a major role.
