The New York Giants were having a productive offseason under new head coach John Harbaugh, until they weren't.

News broke this week that contract talks between Dexter Lawrence and the Giants had stalled, and the three-time Pro Bowler requested a trade away from the franchise. Some thought it was a negotiating tactic, but it's now become apparent it's not.

Per the New York Post's Paul Schwartz, "if Dexter had his wish, he'd never suit up for the Giants again," which is a big statement to make.

And now Lawrence's teammate, Brian Burns, has given his thoughts on the Dexter contract saga.

"Speaking for me, the Giants ain't the Giants without No. 97 in the middle," Burns said via Ryan Dunleavy of The New York Post. "So we are going to figure that out to keep him here regardless, I hope. That's my boy. And I don't want to play this season or any other season without him."

Will Giants find a Lawrence resolution?​

Based on reports, it feels like the only resolution will be Lawrence being traded away, and that isn't great for the Giants. Losing your best defensive piece will leave a big hole in the defense for Harbaugh to fill.

Is there a chance things could work out and Lawrence returns to New York? Sure, but it doesn't seem too likely right now.

Dexter on another team in 2026 is now a glaring reality for the Giants, and we wonder how it is going to impact the Giants' draft plans, because if Lawrence is out, maybe New York looks to add a defensive lineman early in the draft to cover his loss.

The Giants had such hope and optimism heading into the offseason, and with this Lawrence contract saga, some of that has been sucked away from a franchise that desperately needs him on their team.
