After a trade request just over a week ago, the contract situation between the New York Giants and Dexter Lawrence has become a major topic surrounding the team. Lawrence is one of the team's best defensive players and arguably the most consistent performer on the entire roster.
Lawrence is entering the third year of a four-year, $90 million extension he signed following the 2022 season. However, the market for players at his position has risen significantly since then, and Lawrence wants to be compensated in line with his talent. Fellow captain Brian Burns, who is coming off his best professional season, understands how important Lawrence is to the team's success.
"Business is business," Burns told ESPN. "I've been through it. … How I feel technically is that we just need him in the building, regardless of whatever it is. Figure it out. Get it done. I don’t want to see somebody else in that 97 besides Dex. So that’s just my take on it."
Burns' comments come after the Giants and Lawrence's representatives reportedly reached an impasse in contract negotiations.
Last week, head coach John Harbaugh said he was not surprised by the trade request and had seen it coming for some time.
Heading into last season, the Giants were expected to field one of the league's strongest defensive lines. Now, with a new coaching staff in place and the defense coordinated by Dennard Wilson, the unit could improve significantly in 2026.
As the Giants continue preparing for the 2026 NFL draft next week, the contract situation involving the three-time Pro Bowler will remain a prominent storyline until it is resolved. The last thing the organization wants is for the situation to disrupt the locker room in the first year under the new coaching staff.
