The New York Giants made a splash in the first round of the 2025 NFL draft, selecting elite edge rusher Abdul Carter with the No. 3 overall pick. Following their selection, Carter showed interest in wearing the No. 56 jersey number that has been retired for the legendary Lawrence Taylor.
Taylor has since shut down the idea of Carter wearing that jersey number.
In response to Carter's interest, Taylor issued his response quickly. He's not interested in someone taking over the jersey number that he earned his legacy wearing.
"I know he would love to wear that number, but hey, I think it's retired," Taylor said. "Get another number. I don't care if it's double zero, and then make it famous."
Following that situation going public, Shannon Sharpe had some criticism to share about Carter.
"Me personally, I don't even know why he'd want that number," Sharpe said. "That's like a kid going to Chicago and saying 'hey, let me get number 23.'"
Now, Carter has issued a response to Sharpe's criticism.
"I wore #11!!! I have filled BIG SHOES before… If you know football yk who also wore the ST1X," Carter posted on X. "It’s not about the number, it’s about the player! The number just legacy, its iconic, something cool! Look at the LEGACY of ST1X . I came to PSU and not only lived up to that number, but made it even more legendary. That’s how I see it. I shot, if he says no, cool, you miss 100% of the shots you don’t take."

Speaking of the No. 11 jersey number he wore during his career with the Penn State Nittany Lions, plenty of other great players have worn it. He did fill some big shoes.
Among the notable names to wear that number are Micah Parsons, Brandon Bell, NaVorro Bowman, and LaVar Arrington. There are some very good names on that list.
Carter took a shot at wearing the legendary No. 56, but he's also been a good sport about being turned down.
