Emotions were running high following the Indiana Pacers’ 119-118 overtime win over the Milwaukee Bucks on Tuesday — a game that handed the Pacers the series win and ended the Bucks’ season.
But the game may be remembered more for what happened after than what happened during.
After the final whistle blew, Bucks star Giannis Antetokounmpo got into a heated confrontation with who he believed to be a run-of-the-mill fan. However, it didn’t take long for him and everyone else inside Gainbridge Fieldhouse to realize he was actually yelling at the father of Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton.
Videos started making the rounds on social media showing Antetokounmpo and John Haliburton butting heads and engaging in a pretty heated conversation before Antetokounmpo was restrained by event staff.
As the interaction went viral on social media, Antetokounmpo didn’t pull any punches as he passionately spilled his side of what actually happened.
“I believe being humble in victory, that’s the way I am,” Antetokounmpo said. “Now there’s going to be a lot of people out there that’s going to be like no when you win the game you’ve got to talk [expletive] and it’s a green light for you to be disrespectful toward somebody else. I disagree. I’ve won a championship, they haven’t.

“And that doesn’t say anything, I’m not trying to minimize their effort, but I remember when I won, my mom…she was scared to [come onto the court after]. In the moment, I thought it was a fan but then I realized it was Tyrese’s dad…coming on the floor and showing me a towel with his son’s face saying, ‘This is what we do. This is what we [expletive] do.’
“I feel like that’s very, very disrespectful. … Having somebody’s dad…coming to me and disrespecting me, and cursing at me I think is totally unacceptable.”
Antetokounmpo did tell reporters that he spoke with Haliburton’s dad before heading to the locker room and he stated they’re “in a good place.”
The 6-foot-11 power forward finished with 30 points and a series-best 20 rebounds and 13 assists, but it wasn’t enough to outdo a well-balanced Pacers team that got 26 points and nine assists from Haliburton plus 21 points from Myles Turner and 19 points from Aaron Nesmith.
