Germany has made it to the knockout stage at the World Cup for the first time since winning the entire tournament in 2014.

Germany advanced to the round of 32 at the 2026 World Cup after winning Group E. The German side won each of its first two group stage matches before Ecuador managed to beat it and punch its own ticket into the knockout stage.

Now, Julian Nagelsmann's squad will look to bounce back from that narrow, 2-1 loss and set up a potential round of 16 date with France – provided the tournament favorites can handle business against Sweden.

The expectation is Germany will stick with the approach that has worked for it across the early stages of the tournament. The squad has brought its leading goal-scorer, Denis Undav, off the bench as a replacement for Kai Havertz, so barring a change, the 29-year-old will remain in that super-sub role.

Meanwhile, the only other spot to watch will be along the backline. Center back Nico Schlotterbeck is going to miss the remainder of the 2026 World Cup because of an ankle injury. He was replaced by Antonio Rüdiger in the lineup against Ecuador, and the expectation is that the 33-year-old veteran will remain in that role as Germany's tournament continues.

Here's a look at Germany's projected lineup ahead of its round of 32 match against Paraguay.
