Germany takes on Ivory Coast in their next group stage at the World Cup after smashing Curaçao 7-1 in the previous match. A quick look at the path of the winner of Germany’s group (Group E) into the knockouts would mean Die Mannschaft is almost certainly going to get France in the last 16. Manuel Neuer knows his country must secure first place and their ticket to the knockout rounds first.

“We want to secure our spot in the knockout stage after the second game [against Côte D’Ivoire]. Then we can plan ahead,” Neuer said (as captured by X account @iMiaSanMia). “I know a lot is being spoken about [round of 16 against] France, but we don’t want to think about that at all. Our only focus is on the next game.”

A win against Ivory Coast would secure progression to the last 32 and almost certainly first place in the group.
