Philipp Raimund showed nerves like steel to claim a stunning normal hill ski jumping Olympic gold for Germany while Slovenian World Cup dominator Domen Prevc missed the medals.
Raimund is yet to win a World Cup competition but he led the first round with 102 metres and then added 106.5m on the last jump of the competition for his biggest career moment.
Poland's Kacper Tomasiak rose from fourth to silver with a massive second jump of 107m, 3.4 points behind Raimund.
Ren Nikaido of Japan shared bronze with Swiss jumper Gregor Deschwanden in a dramatic competition in which Frenchman Valentin Foubert slipped from second to fifth and Norway's Kristoffer Eriksson Sundal from third to 10th.
"I don't know how I did it. I am so proud. Never winning a World Cup and being at the top on the biggest stage is unbelievable," Raimund told broadcasters ARD.
"I was very nervous before the first jump and knew before the second that the others had jumped far."
Raimund's win was no complete surprise as he had already impressed in Predazzo training and had several World Cup podium finishes this season.
Four Hills winner and ski flying world champion Prevc meanwhile had to be content with sixth instead of gold, two days after his sister Nika got only silver in the women's event as season leader
The Austrians were also well beaten, with Stephan Embacher their best in seventh, and the 2022 winner Ryoyu Kobayashi of Japan placed eighth.
