Germany goalkeeper Oliver Baumann will be unavailable for Hoffenheim for the time being due to a concussion.

The 34-year-old sustained the injury during a controversial incident leading to Borussia Dortmund's winning goal in last Saturday's 3-2 victory in the Bundesliga.

"My diagnosis shows that player safety on the pitch is paramount, as such situations can, in the worst case, lead to long-term consequences," Baumann said in a statement on Wednesday.

"For this reason, there can be no equivocation: play must be stopped immediately in cases of potential head injuries, regardless of the game situation at that moment."

Baumann will certainly miss Hoffenheim's Bundesliga game on Saturday against Borussia Mönchengladbach. The south-western club are still not safe from relegation.

"Oli's concussion hits us really hard. Not only did we lose the game against Borussia Dortmund due to what we consider an irregular goal, but now we’re also losing our captain and key player in goal during the crucial final stretch of the season," Hoffenheim's sporting director Andreas Schicker said.

It remains unclear how long Baumann, the current Germany number one while Marc-André ter Stegen works his way to full fitness, will be sidelined for. Germany face Portugal in the Nations League semi-final on June 4 in Munich.
