The college football season is a little more than a month away. Soon, teams will begin their quest for a spot in the College Football Playoff. One of the favorites resides in Athens, Georgia, where the Bulldogs will look to return to the national title game for the first time in four years.
Head coach Kirby Smart has consistently kept his team in championship contention throughout the decade. It appears one key factor drives his approach: youth. Every college football roster features young players, but Georgia enters the 2026 season with the youngest roster in the country.

Sports Illustrated highlighted that trend, along with other contenders following a similar approach:

“The Bulldogs will field 87 underclassmen, including 52 freshmen. That accounts for 69.6% of the team, as Georgia only has 15 seniors among its 125 total players,” Dustin Lewis wrote.
“Luckily, there is plenty of time for Georgia to foster chemistry in September. The Bulldogs face Tennessee State and Western Kentucky to open the season and travel to Arkansas on September 19. The real test will be the following weekend when Oklahoma comes to town.”
Smart has been an elite recruiter dating back to his time as an assistant under Nick Saban. Now leading his alma mater, he has only strengthened his ability to attract top talent.

He has also navigated the NIL era effectively. At a time when programs such as Texas A&M reportedly spend millions on recruiting, Smart has continued to strike a balance in his recruiting approach.

That approach extends beyond NIL opportunities, though Georgia offers plenty of those as well. Smart has built one of the nation’s strongest NFL pipelines, and his track record speaks for itself, with Georgia players routinely hearing their names called early in the NFL Draft.
That success stems in large part from Georgia’s formula. While the Bulldogs supplement their roster with transfer portal additions, they continue to rely heavily on developing the players they recruit.
That commitment has created a consistent pipeline of NFL-caliber talent. The question now is whether Kirby Smart and the Bulldogs can return to the top of college football with that formula in 2026.
