The Georgia Bulldogs baseball team has had several upset losses over their season, but this past one might take the cake. On Tuesday, March 24, the No. 7 Bulldogs (20-6, 4-2 SEC) lost to the Kennesaw State Owls (11-10). Georgia's 10-7 loss to Kennesaw State came at Foley Field. This marks their first loss against Kennesaw State since 2021 and the first home loss against the Owls since 2017.
The score doesn't tell how badly this game went for Georgia. They were down 9-0 by the middle of the seventh inning, in danger of getting run-ruled. Kennesaw State scored one run in the second, one in the third, two in the fourth, one in the sixth, and four in the seventh.
Georgia made a comeback to avoid an early ending to the game. They scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh, and while they allowed a run in the top of the eighth, they scored three right back. However, their bats ran out of gas by the bottom of the ninth, sealing the 10-7 loss.
Kennesaw State pitcher Ty Bayer earned the win, improving his record to 3-2. Meanwhile, Georgia starter Thomas Ellisen earns the loss, and he still hasn't earned a win yet. KSU closer Harry Cain earned the save.
The Bulldogs have had some puzzling losses throughout the season, such as a 6-3 defeat vs. Wright State, a 6-5 loss versus Troy that went 12 innings, and a 10-9 heartbreaker vs. Western Carolina, where the potential tying run was overturned by the Catamounts' first baseman making an incredible play to get out Georgia outfielder Tre' Phelps. Their impressive resume speaks for itself, but the Bulldogs need to stop letting games against inferior opponents get away from them if they want to make it further than the regionals this season.
Georgia's prolific hitting can only carry the Bulldogs so far. Georgia has to pitch with better consistency to make a College Baseball World Series run this season.
