George Russell’sBelgian Grand Prix went from bad to worse in the blink of an eye, culminating in a race-ending Lap 1 collision with Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton at Les Combes.
While the FIA stewards handed Hamilton a five-second penalty for the contact—a ruling that former F1 driver Jolyon Palmer explicitly called “harsh” due to the realities of cold tires and dirty air—it was the circumstances leading up to the crash that left Russell absolutely furious.
Russell publicly complained that his battery failed to recharge, exiting Turn 1 “35% down” and leaving him dangerously exposed on the Kemmel Straight. In response, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff quickly went into damage control, claiming that a fleet-wide battery glitch affected all Mercedes-powered cars at the start. However, Palmer just took a deep dive into the data, and his findings completely dismantle the official team narrative.
In his latest post-race breakdown for FORMULA 1, Palmer highlighted exactly why Russell has every right to be frustrated with his garage.
While Wolff claimed the lack of deployment hit everyone equally, Palmer pulled the telemetry from the run through Eau Rouge and Raidillon. The data showed a massive disparity: Russell’s teammate, Kimi Antonelli, had significantly more electrical deployment. While Antonelli used that extra speed to attack Max Verstappen for the race lead, Russell was hopelessly swamped by the Ferraris and McLarens behind him.
“That would frustrate me if I was George Russell, to hear the team boss keep trying to deflect from what is clearly an issue that George is facing, but some of the others aren’t,” Palmer noted, pointing directly to the data traces that showed Russell’s battery completely falling off a cliff compared to Antonelli’s.
Earlier in the week, Mercedes suggested that driving style differences were primarily responsible for the battery failing to harvest properly, claiming Russell was struggling to top up his energy in Sector 2. But Palmer’s analysis points to something much more fundamental within the power unit itself.
To prove his point, Palmer pulled the Q3 qualifying data for the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri, who also run the exact same 2026 Mercedes customer engines. Shockingly, the same anomaly appeared. Despite near-identical racing lines, gear shifts, and braking traces, one McLaren driver (Piastri) suffered massive energy derating at the end of the lap while the other (Norris) did not.

Because this exact power split is happening across two different teams running the same engine, Palmer suspects the root cause is mechanical, not human. Whether it is an inefficient MGU-K failing to harvest or a severe battery seep failing to retain the charge, the data heavily implies that specific components in the Mercedes power units are delivering for one driver and completely starving the other.
As the grid heads toward the Hungarian Grand Prix, Mercedes will have to do some serious investigating to find a fix. Right now, the telemetry suggests Russell is fighting a mechanical ghost that his teammate simply doesn’t have.
