We already knew George Russell was fighting a mysterious, deeply frustrating power deficit at the Belgian Grand Prix. But newly surfaced telemetry proves the issue was far more severe—and far more systemic—than a simple setup error.
Following a disastrous Sunday for the British driver, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff officially admitted the root cause of the chaos, stating that “All Mercedes engines had a software issue from the start onwards.”
However, a closer look at the side-by-side data shows that while the entire Mercedes fleet might have been compromised, Russell’s W17 bore the absolute, race-ruining brunt of the digital glitch.
If you look at the onboard telemetry comparisons from the Kemmel Straight (as shown here), the straight-line speed delta between the front-runners is staggering.
On a circuit where top speed is everything, the McLaren duo of Lando Norris and Oscar Piastri were comfortably blasting up the hill at 344 kph and 337 kph, respectively. Meanwhile, Russell was actively fighting a ghost in the machine. The data reveals that Russell’s top speed was artificially hard-capped at a mere 308 kph for nearly four whole seconds.
To put that massive deficit into perspective, his rookie teammate Kimi Antonelli physically lifted off the throttle during his run, yet the young Italian still easily carried 318 kph down the exact same stretch of tarmac.
This raw telemetry perfectly validates Russell’s intense frustration throughout the Spa-Francorchamps weekend. While the Mercedes garage frantically searched for aerodynamic or mechanical explanations on Friday and Saturday, Russell was adamant that the car was simply refusing to go faster.

During qualifying, Russell explicitly told reporters that he was watching his steering wheel delta drop while running full gas, bluntly stating: “I feel powerless. We don’t know what is going on. I don’t think it is the power unit. There is something slowing me down on the straights”.
He was absolutely right. It wasn’t a mechanical failure of the internal combustion engine; it was a bad line of code that effectively deployed a digital parachute every time he opened the DRS.
When you combine a four-second 308 kph speed cap with the 0% battery deployment failure that ultimately left him vulnerable to his Lap 1 collision with Lewis Hamilton, it is an absolute miracle that Russell even managed to drag that compromised chassis onto the second row of the grid during qualifying. Mercedes has a lot of debugging to do before the paddock heads to the next round.
