The San Francisco 49ers have one of the more difficult to rank quarterbacks in the National Football League in Brock Purdy. The ranking is complex for a number of reasons.
The NFL's first impression of Purdy came early in his career when he was taken dead-last in the NFL draft. The former Iowa State quarterback became the most famous "Mr. Irrelevant" to pan out in the league after being taken with the last pick in the seventh round.
Since taking over as the 49ers' quarterback, Purdy has led the 49ers to multiple conference title games and a Super Bowl appearance.
While he may not stun fans statistically with raw numbers, his season averages for passer rating have finished above 100.0 in three of his four NFL seasons. His career-worst passer rating was 96.1 in 2024 where he threw for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions while completing 65.9% of his passing attempts.
In every other NFL season, Purdy has completed at least 67.0% of passing attempts including last season's shortened campaign where he went for 2,167 yards, 20 touchdowns and 10 interceptions with a 69.4% completion rate.
Purdy was ranked by the NFL Network as the No. 85 overall player in their Top 100 rankings. The ranking caused a stir across the league given there are strong opinions either way on Purdy.
San Francisco 49ers tight end George Kittle weighed in on the ranking with a clever comment. Kittle shared on social media, "Honestly, that number looks great next to him."
Kittle, of course, wears the No. 85 jersey on Sundays. The implication was that Kittle and Purdy work well in tandem on the field. The numbers back that up.
In a first full season with Purdy at quarterback, Kittle saw a statistical explosion on the field in 2023. That year, star tight end put up his first 1,000 yard receiving season since 2019 with 1,020 receiving yards and 15.7 yards per reception. That would be a good per catch average for a wide receiver.
In 2024, Kittle again crossed the 1,000-yard receiving mark with 1,106 yards, 14.2 yards per reception and eight touchdowns.
After going down with injury, it's difficult to fault NFL players for ranking Purdy at No. 85 based on the last NFL season. Still, it's clear that his tight end is glad that Purdy mans the quarterback position. The tandem will look to lead another playoff run in 2026.
