Gent pip Genk to final European ticket thanks to Davy Roef’s heroics

Davy Roef once again proved to be a penalty saving expert as his heroics earned Gent the final European ticket. Genk and Gent met in the final game of the Belgian Pro League season to decide who would take the ticket for the Europa Conference League qualification rounds. The game ended 0-0 after 90 minutes, with Genk then looking to have won it during extra time thanks to a goal from Robin Mirosola. However, Gent were given a late penalty which was then converted by youngster Tibe de Vlieger.

The game then went to penalties, with neither side missing their first four spot kicks. August De Wannemacker, who is just 17, was given the final penalty for Genk. He had just seen Momodou Sonko convert for Gent, but sadly he could not do the same. His well struck penalty was saved by Davy Roef to add another highlight to his career of coming up big during penalty shoot outs.

Genk will now face a season without European football, having missed out two seasons ago. During that year, they challenged for the title. Gent now return to European football having missed out last year. The side have done well in the Conference League historically, but will now have to go through the qualification rounds.
