Genoa’s Makenna Moritz has embarked on the second half of her high school career.

The junior continues to add to her game. This is the final season Moritz will play with her sister, senior Addisyn Moritz, and they’d like to help the Comets persist with an upward trajectory.

Genoa won 18 games last season and captured at least a share of its first conference crown in almost 10 years. The Comets split the Northern Buckeye Conference championship with Oak Harbor, after each beat the other.

Genoa (11-3, 5-1) fell 51-40 to the Rockets in the first matchup this season. The Comets visit Oak Harbor (9-4, 6-0) on January 24.

“We know we have to go game by game,” Makenna Moritz said. “We’ll worry about those games when we get there. (The crown) is a big deal, so is a tournament run.”

Moritz was a starter as a freshman, before she took a step up last season. Special mention all-state her first two years, she averaged 16.9 points, 9.5 rebounds and two steals as a sophomore.

She averages 16 points and eight rebounds this season.

“She’s extremely unselfish and she’s learned to get her teammates involved and make her teammates better,” Genoa coach Glenn Black said. “She’s bought in to doing what’s best for the team. She puts the team before herself.

“She’s handled everything well.”

At 5-foot, 10 inches, Moritz is extremely versatile.

“She can handle the ball, she can play in the post, she can shoot it, she can defend multiple positions and do whatever it takes to help the team,” Black said. “She has a lot of grit. She’s very physical. She’s not afraid of contact and she’ll finish through contact.”

She’s worked at defending taller girls and can keep guards in front of her. She helps with leadership as a captain, along with Lucy Schlageter and Keira Combs.

“She’s not afraid to be vocal and she has the respect of her teammates,” Black said of Moritz. “Each year she learns a little more; a little more confidence. She understands it’s team first.”

Addisyn Moritz and classmates Combs and Adrianna Williams have all been in the varsity mix since they were freshmen. Williams sets a defensive tone and Schlageter also finds numerous ways to impact a game.

“Those kids mean so much to the program,” Black said. “We’re grateful for every day we get to spend with them. This is a special group who care about each other.”

Addisyn averaged 12.5 points and 3.2 steals to earn honorable mention all-state status last season.

“Everybody has their own night,” Makenna said. “We have threats from all different areas.”

Closer to the end of her high school career than the beginning, Moritz has learned her part.

“We can’t use us being young as an excuse anymore,” she said. “Knowing teams will play me a little differently — I look for a skip pass or kick it out. A shot might not be there any more. There are more ways to help the team than scoring.”
