The Boston Red Sox endured highly publicized air travel issues ahead of their 6-2 win over the New York Mets last Friday night, and Gary Cohen was not impressed.

Mechanical issues on their team plane grounded the Red Sox for nearly 24 hours as they attempted to get from Chicago to New York last week. They arrived at Citi Field shortly after 5 p.m. ET Friday evening, delaying the start of the game by 36 minutes to 7:51 p.m.

It was the travel delay heard round the world, with the Red Sox’ plane issues garnering national headlines. And one person who grew tired of hearing about it was Mets TV play-by-play voice, Gary Cohen.

“I have to say, if I hear one more person talk about Red Sox difficult travel, I might just have to expire,” Cohen ranted to broadcast partner Ron Darling on SNY over the weekend. “I mean, come on! Has anybody ever seen minor league travel?”

Cohen went on to explain the much more grueling travel schedule endured by Minor League Baseball players, noting it’s something every Major Leaguer experienced early in their careers. And what the Red Sox endured last week wasn’t even as challenging as Minor League travel.

“The overkill on this story is just unbelievable,” Cohen continued. “Come on, folks. Let’s get a grip. We’re traveling on charter flights. They slept in a nice hotel in Chicago the night before.”

Cohen did, however, previously air some grievances about the Mets’ early-season travel woes, noting that four of their first five road trips were on the West Coast. He didn’t sympathize with the Mets as much as Keith Hernandez, who said Major League Baseball should be “hung to the highest oak tree for that kind of schedule.” But Cohen did seem to think the stacked West Coast trips played a role in their brutal start to the season, and the Mets never even had to endure mechanical issues.

As for the Red Sox, Cohen is right. The travel challenges were more unique than they were hampering for the Red Sox. It’s not like the players were stuck on an airplane for 24 hours. Sure, they arrived at Citi Field after they should have already taken the field for batting practice. But they spent most of the 24-hour delay enjoying all the amenities a nice hotel in Chicago has to offer.
