Yirer Garcia’s RBI single in the 10th inning gave the Charleston RiverDogs their 1th walk-off win of the season in their 6-5 victory over the Kannapolis Cannon Ballers in 10 innings on Aug. 7 in front of 3,745 fans at Riley Park.
With the victory, the RiverDogs (59-46, 23-17 second half) evened the series at two games apiece and moved to 3-3 in extra innings.
The RiverDogs opened the game emphatically, beginning when Cooper Flemming grounded an RBI single to center to make it 1-0.
Later in the frame, Brady Marget pounded an RBI double to left and Dean Moss lined an RBI double to right to push Charleston ahead 4-0.
In the top of the fifth, Kannapolis (54-52, 22-19) responded with a five-run third to jump ahead 5-4. Charleston evened the score in the fourth when Flemming lifted a sacrifice fly to left.
Both sides traded scoreless frames through the ninth. Miguel Toscano dominated in his Single-A debut, retiring all 12 hitters he faced with four strikeouts. In the process, he earned the win.
Tied at 5 in the bottom of the 10th, Garcia stepped to the plate with runners at the corners and blasted a walk-off single off the wall in right field to win the game. Charleston’s 11 walk-off wins this year match the highest single-season total since 2005.
Ballpark fun
The volume was turned way up for Rock Night at The Joe. Fans were in their band tees, rock favorites played throughout the ballpark and fans even had the chance to win a free Roku in an air guitar battle between innings.
The RiverDogs also continued the tradition of Boeing Red Shirt Friday, honoring active duty and retired military members and their families. The players took the field in their red and white jerseys. And after the final out, fans stuck around for the perfect Friday night finish, which was a fireworks show lighting up the sky over The Joe.
Coming up
The two teams return to the Joe on Saturday for Game 5 of the series. First pitch is slated for 6:05 p.m. with coverage beginning at 5:50 on the RiverDogs Broadcast Network.
Saturday is Knights of the Diamond Table Night featuring a in-game jersey auction. Fans will face in-game contests, sword fighting and other challenges to earns points to see whose side — the Yellow Knights of the Rising Sun or the Blue Knights of the Blue Flame — is victorious.
Sunday is MUSC Health Family Sunday and Larry Doby Day with the Cannon Street All Stars. South Carolina native Doby, the first African American to break the color barrier in the American League will be celebrated. The RiverDogs will take the field as the Newark Eagles, while the Cannon Ballers will play as the Homestead Grays, paying tribute to two of baseball's most iconic Negro League clubs. The day will feature a special pregame recognition of the Cannon Street All Stars, celebrating their lasting impact on baseball history and the Charleston community.
Fans will also witness the presentation of the Augustus J. and Lawrence Holt Scholarship. The first 100 fans through the gates receive a commemorative T-shirt, with fans able to choose between a Newark Eagles or Homestead Grays design while supplies last. Families can enjoy free parking, and after the game, kids are invited onto the field to run the bases.
