RALEIGH – N.C. State is set to hire Justin Gainey as its men's basketball coach, according to numerous news outlets – including WRAL in Raleigh.

Gainey – who grew up in High Point – has most recently been the associate head coach under Rick Barnes at Tennessee, which concluded its season Sunday in the Elite Eight.

After graduating from Greensboro Day, he played for the Wolfpack in 1996-2000 under Herb Sendek and was an administrator in the program in 2006-09 under Sidney Lowe after playing professionally for three seasons.

He was selected first team all-tournament of the ACC Tournament in 1997, when N.C. State reached the championship game after winning three games in three days.

Gainey played a season in Austria and a season in France before returning to the United States to play a season with the Pennsylvania ValleyDawgs of the USBL.

He was administrative coordinator in 2006-08 and director of operations in 2008-09 at N.C. State before beginning his coaching career in 2009-10 at Elon.

His coaching stops as an assistant have included Appalachian State under Jason Capel, Santa Clara under Sendek, Arizona under Archie Miller, Marquette under Steve Wojciechowski and most recently Tennessee under Rick Barnes.

All of whom have strong ties to the ACC – including Sendek and Miller, who coached Gainey while at N.C. State. Barnes, who coached at Clemson in the '90s, voiced his support earlier this week.

"I don't think there's anyone in the country who loves N.C. State more than Justin Gainey," Barnes said. "He's a North Carolina native, went to N.C. State, started four years there. He just has incredible pride in his university, and he's a terrific basketball coach.

"If N.C. State knew what I know, they'd be begging him to be their new head coach," he added.

The Volunteers had a 134-48 record (62-28 in the SEC) during Gainey's tenure – winning the SEC in 2023-24 and reaching the Elite Eight in each of the last three seasons.

He replaces Will Wade, who returned to LSU after one season in which the Wolfpack went 20-14 (10-8 in the ACC, tying for seventh) and reached the First Four of the NCAA Tournament.
