Furman men’s soccer is the hottest team in the country.
The No. 16 seed Paladins (15-1-4) host Hofstra (14-5-0) in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament at Eugene Stone III Soccer Stadium on Nov. 30 (1 p.m., ESPN+).
The winner of this first meeting between the programs will advance to the Elite Eight on Dec. 6 or Dec. 7 at No. 8 seed Portland, which beat Grand Canyon, 1-0, on Nov. 29.
Furman has the nation’s longest winning streak at nine games and unbeaten streak at 12. They Paladins had a first-round bye in the NCAA tournament and beat Western Michigan at home in the second round.
Hofstra (14-5-0) beat Syracuse, 2-0, in the opening round and then upset No. 1 seed and defending national champion Vermont in the second round, 3-2 in overtime.
Both coaches are set to retire at the end of this season, and they are tied for 10th place among active coaches with 364 career wins.
Furman’s Doug Allison, in his 31st year, has led the Paladins to the NCAA tournament 11 times. Hofstra’s Richard Nuttall is in his 37th season.
Diego Hernandez leads Furman in scoring nine goals and nine assists. He was the Southern Conference player of the year. Wilfer Bustamante, a former J.L. Mann standout, has seven goals and eight assists.
