Two rounds down. Sixty-eight teams have been whittled to sixteen, and the bracket looks nothing like what most people had on their sheets. The first weekend of the 2026 NCAA Tournament delivered what March always promises: chaos wrapped in a buzzworthy highlight reel. Florida, the defending champion, is gone. Kansas is out. Gonzaga, a perennial second-weekend fixture, fell to an 11-seed that started its tournament life in a First Four play-in game in Dayton.
What’s left is a field of sixteen teams that earned every bit of the right to be here still. Three of the four No. 1 seeds survived intact: Duke, Arizona, and Michigan all advanced without breaking much of a sweat. Iowa State punished Kentucky 82-63 in the second round to make it four for four on the No. 2 seed line alongside Purdue, Houston, and UConn. But it’s the teams that clawed their way through the bracket against the odds that are going to make the second weekend worth every minute.
The bracket-busters to the blue bloods, these are the sixteen teams still standing, counted down from the field to the frontrunners. The madness is only getting started.

Utah State’s tournament run began when it knocked off No. 8 Villanova 86-76 in the first round, turning the bracket upside down from the start. The Aggies are the lowest-seeded team still alive, with nothing to lose and everything to gain. Nobody expected them here, which is exactly the kind of energy that makes a Sweet 16 run dangerous. They face No. 1 Arizona next, and on paper, it looks like a mismatch. On a basketball court in March, paper means nothing.

First round: Beat No. 8 Ohio State 68-66. Second round: Lost to No. 1 Duke 81-58.
TCU opened the tournament with a two-point win over Ohio State in the very first game of the 2026 bracket, which set the tone for a wild first round. They gave Duke a game before bowing out in the second round 81-58, but their presence in the Sweet 16 is a testament to how deep and competitive the East bracket is. The Horned Frogs arrived. They competed. Duke was just a better team on that day.

Second round: Beat No. 4 Kansas 67-65 on a buzzer-beating layup by Dylan Darling.
St. John’s has been one of the tournament’s most compelling storylines since they edged Kansas in one of the best second-round games of the weekend. The Red Storm haven’t been to the Sweet 16 in decades and are playing with the kind of loose, fearless energy that makes them genuinely dangerous. They draw No. 1 Duke next, and given what they just did to Kansas, nobody is writing them off.
Mar 20, 2026; Tampa, FL, USA; Iowa Hawkeyes guard Bennett Stirtz (14) is defended by Clemson Tigers guard Butta Johnson (4) and guard Dillon Hunter (2) in the second half during a first round game of the men’s 2026 NCAA Tournament at Benchmark International Arena. Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images
Second round: Beat No. 1 Florida on an Alvaro Folgueiras corner three with under five seconds left.
Iowa is the tournament’s biggest story right now. Knocking off the defending champion Florida with a buzzer-beater to reach the Sweet 16 is the kind of moment that gets replayed for years. Alvaro Folgueiras hit the shot, the bench erupted, and Florida’s title defense ended in the cruelest possible fashion. The Hawkeyes are the team nobody wants to play right now, and for good reason.
Jan 21, 2026; Lincoln, Nebraska, USA; Nebraska Cornhuskers guard Cale Jacobsen (31), guard Jamarques Lawrence (10) and forward Berke Buyuktuncel (9) react after a dunk by forward Pryce Sandfort (21) during the second half against the Washington Huskies at Pinnacle Bank Arena. Mandatory Credit: Dylan Widger-Imagn Images
Nebraska is in its first-ever Sweet 16, and it got here the hard way, closing out its second-round game with a last-second layup that sent Cornhusker fans into an absolute frenzy. This is uncharted territory for a program that has historically been a football school first and a basketball school second. Coach Fred Hoiberg has built something real in Lincoln, and the second weekend of the tournament is the proof.

Arkansas got past High Point, the tournament’s first upset-maker, in the second round and has looked composed throughout. The Razorbacks are an experienced, physical team that thrives in hostile environments, and the Sweet 16 is exactly the kind of stage they built their roster for. They face No. 1 Arizona in what figures to be the most physical game of the West region.
Mar 20, 2026; Philadelphia, PA, USA; Tennessee Volunteers guard Ja’kobi Gillespie (0) celebrates after a shot during the second half against the Miami (OH) RedHawks during a first round game of the men’s 2026 NCAA Tournament at Xfinity Mobile Arena. Mandatory Credit: Bill Streicher-Imagn Images
Tennessee is in the Sweet 16 for the fourth time in recent years and has done it the Tennessee way: relentless defense, tough rebounding, and just enough offense to get the job done. The Vols aren’t flashy, but they are incredibly hard to beat, and they match up well with Iowa State in a South region game that could go down to the final possession.
Mar 13, 2026; Chicago, IL, USA; Illinois Fighting Illini center Zvonimir Ivisic (44) celebrates after scoring against the Wisconsin Badgers during the first half at United Center. Mandatory Credit: Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images
Second round: Beat No. 11 VCU 76-55.
Illinois handled VCU comfortably in the second round and has looked like a team with genuine Final Four ambitions. The Illini bring size, depth, and a defensive identity that makes them one of the hardest teams in the bracket to score on consistently. Their Sweet 16 matchup with No. 2 Houston is the game of the round, a clash of two programs that believe they have what it takes to go all the way.

Alabama Crimson Tide guard Aden Holloway (2) drives on Auburn Tigers forward Keyshawn Hall (7) as the Auburn Tigers take on the Alabama Crimson Tide at Neville Arena in Auburn, Ala., on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026.
Alabama has been lights-out from three-point range throughout the tournament, knocking down 19 triples in their second-round romp over Texas Tech. When they are shooting like that, they are capable of beating anyone in the bracket on any given night. The Crimson Tide draws No. 1 Michigan in the South region, and if their shooters are hot, that matchup is a genuine toss-up.
Mar 19, 2026; Portland, OR, USA; Texas Longhorns forward Dailyn Swain (3) drives against BYU Cougars forward Khadim Mboup (7) in the second half during a first round game of the men’s 2026 NCAA Tournament at Moda Center. Mandatory Credit: Craig Strobeck-Imagn Images
Path to Sweet 16: First Four win over NC State, first round win over BYU, second round win over No. 3 Gonzaga.
Texas is this tournament’s ultimate Cinderella story. They started in the First Four, knocked off BYU, then took down Gonzaga in one of the second round’s biggest upsets. Three games played, three games won, and nobody in their path has figured out how to stop Matas Vokietatis, who posted a 23-point, double-double performance against BYU. They face No. 2 Purdue next. The glass slipper is still on.
Feb 22, 2026; East Lansing, Michigan, USA; Michigan State Spartans head coach Tom Izzo huddles with his players during the first half against the Ohio State Buckeyes at Jack Breslin Student Events Center. Mandatory Credit: Dale Young-Imagn Images
Second round: Beat No. 6 Louisville 77-69. Guard Fears registered 12 points and a tournament-record 16 assists.
Michigan State’s point guard Fears put on one of the most breathtaking individual performances of the tournament so far, recording 16 assists in their second-round win over Louisville, the highest assist total by any Michigan State player in NCAA tournament history. The Spartans are in the Sweet 16 for a reason and have the kind of guard play that wins championships. They draw No. 2 UConn, a rematch the entire college basketball world wants to see.

UConn doesn’t need a storyline. They are the storyline. Back-to-back champions in 2023 and 2024, the Huskies are chasing history that has never been done in the modern era of college basketball: three consecutive national titles. Dan Hurley’s program doesn’t flinch in March. They thrive in it. Anyone who draws UConn in the Sweet 16 knows exactly what they are walking into.

Second round: Routed Kentucky 82-63. Tamin Lipsey: 26 points, 10 assists.
Iowa State didn’t just beat Kentucky in the second round. They dismantled them. Tamin Lipsey’s 26-point, 10-assist explosion was the kind of performance that sends a message to the rest of the bracket. The Cyclones are deep, well-coached, and playing their best basketball of the season at exactly the right time. They are a legitimate Final Four contender, and everyone still in the bracket knows it.
Purdue Boilermakers guard Braden Smith (3) is high fived by guard Omer Mayer (17) after Smith breaks the record in assists in the NCAA during a NCAA Tournament first round game against the Queens University of Charlotte Royals on Friday, March 20, 2026, at Enterprise Center in St. Louis.
Purdue was the first team to clinch their Sweet 16 spot, beating Miami 79-69 with the kind of controlled, dominant performance that has defined their season. Matt Painter’s program has been building toward a deep tournament run for years, and this year’s roster has the balance of veteran experience and raw talent to make it happen. Their matchup with No. 11 Texas is the most intriguing in the West region.
Feb 28, 2026; Tucson, Arizona, USA; Arizona Wildcats forward Koa Peat (10) celebrates during the first half of the game against the Kansas Jayhawks at McKale Memorial Center. Mandatory Credit: Aryanna Frank-Imagn Images
Arizona has looked like the most complete team in the tournament through two rounds. The Wildcats aren’t just winning; they are covering ground on both ends of the floor, suggesting they are playing well within themselves. The fact that they haven’t needed to dig deep yet might be the most unsettling thing about them. When Arizona turns it up, teams fold.
Feb 28, 2026; St. Louis, Missouri, USA; Saint Louis Billikens center Robbie Avila (21) reacts after making a three point shot against the Duquesne Dukes during the second half at Chaifetz Arena. Mandatory Credit: Jeff Curry-Imagn Images
Tournament results: Beat No. 16 Siena 71-65, beat No. 9 TCU 81-58.
Duke enters the Sweet 16 as the most dominant team in the bracket, the top overall seed, and the program carrying the weight of expectation that comes with being college basketball’s most scrutinized program. Jon Scheyer’s squad has shown poise, efficiency, and the kind of defensive intensity that makes them the clear favorite to reach Indianapolis. Every team left in the bracket is, at some level, trying to figure out how to beat Duke.
Alabama Crimson Tide guard Aden Holloway (2) drives on Auburn Tigers forward Keyshawn Hall (7) as Auburn Tigers take on Alabama Crimson Tide at Neville Arena in Auburn, Ala. on Saturday, Feb. 7, 2026.
The Sweet 16 isn’t just the second weekend of a basketball tournament. It’s where the real March Madness begins. The field is lean, the talent is concentrated, and every game from here is one that will be remembered. Iowa’s Cinderella shot, Texas still dancing in the West, Michigan State’s record-breaking assist performance, and Duke waiting at the top of the bracket like a final boss. Tips off Thursday, March 26. Clear your schedule.
