FIFA has banned refillable water bottles from World Cup stadiums, adding them to a list of prohibited items for the 2026 tournament.
The rule, set out in its official code of conduct, marks a shift from previous World Cups where sealed drinks were sometimes allowed, and will apply across host venues in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Organizers say the restriction is designed to improve safety and speed up security checks, but it is likely to have a noticeable impact on fans.
Supporters will be forced to rely on stadium vendors, raising concerns over prices and access, particularly during matches in high temperatures.
A FIFA spokesperson said: “FIFA is committed to protecting the health and safety of all players, referees, fans, volunteers and staff. FIFA made the decision to prohibit bottles to prevent risk and injury to players and attendees.”
Water bottles are just one of dozens of items now barred from entry, with the full list including containers and large bags as FIFA tightens stadium rules for the expanded tournament.
