Florida State softball will have to play more games to capture the NCAA regional as the Auburn Tigers upset the fifth-seeded Seminoles on Sunday, forcing a doubleheader.
Ever since Isa Torres' solo home run, Julia Apsel and SJ Guerin have been pitching a duel. Guerin became the winning pitcher at 23-11 after being a reliever for pitcher Harley Rainey. FSU only produced three hits while Auburn had eight.
Auburn took over the game in the bottom fourth when it scored three runs on two hits, including a solo home run that tied the game before the Tigers took a 3-1 lead. Then, they added four more runs, including back-to-back home runs.
After trailing 7-1, FSU finally responded with a two-run blast by Katie Dack to cut Auburn's lead to 7-3.
Apsel lasted four innings. While she put on a five-strike-out performance, she allowed three hits, three earned runs, and three walks.
Annabelle Widra, a former Auburn Tiger, took over in the fifth for the Seminoles, but after allowing two more home runs with two outs, Lonni Alameda went deep in the bullpen and put in Mimi Gooden to end the inning and close out the game.
Game No. 7 will be set in 35 minutes.
