Rintaro Sasaki delivered a walk-off grand slam for Stanford to beat Florida State baseball 7-4, and secure a stunning sweep over the Seminoles on Sunday, April 26, in Palo Alto.
The Cardinal got back-to-back singles to lead off the inning, and a walk loaded the bases against the No. 8 Seminoles (29-14, 12-9 ACC).
FSU turned to Kevin Mebil after Gabe Nard allowed the walk in relief of Brodie Purcell. Sasaki took two balls from Mebil before the lefty blasted a ball to the opposite field for the walk-off grand slam, a second straight walk-off win for Stanford.
It's only the second time Stanford has swept FSU in program history, and they now lead the series 12-11 all-time. The Seminoles have lost two ACC series this season, both were sweeps, one to Georgia Tech and now the Cardinal.
FSU jumped out to a two-run lead in the first inning, with a Hunter Carns RBI single and then a wild pitch scoring another. Stanford chipped away at the lead and kept the Seminoles' offense quiet. An RBI single in the second and an RBI double in the fourth tied the game.
An RBI single from Cal Fisher in the sixth inning briefly restored the Seminoles ' advantage, but it was erased by a 2-out dropped third strike on Sasaki. The ball traveled far enough to score the run from third and let Sasaki reach first instead of ending the inning.
It was a costly error, and despite a solo home run to lead off the ninth from Eli Putnam, Sasaki delivered the sweep in emphatic fashion with the walk-off grand slam.
