The roars of Dick Howser Stadium fans began well before first pitch of Tuesday nights 11-6 win for Florida State baseball over Stetson.
In the first athletic event since 20-year-old Phoenix Ikner killed two people and injured six students in an on-campus shooting, the No. 7 Seminoles (28-7) honored students, staff, medical personnel and first responders in a pregame ceremony.
Hundreds of FSU students lined the outfield of the stadium while the Marching Chiefs blared the iconic Warchant as the university aimed to capture a sense of normalcy days after the tragic event. Cheers equivalent to those given to Max Williams and Gage Harrelson for their home runs in the game were shared for first responders and the Tallahassee Memorial Medical Staff.
Dr. Matthew Ramseyer, a trauma response surgeon at TMH, threw out the first pitch with adoration from the crowd.
The Seminoles continued to honor first responders throughout the game, with a fourth-inning standing ovation filling Howser with thunderous applause.
The half-hour pregame ceremony was followed by a comeback win for the Seminoles, with Gage Harrelson and Chase Williams producing special performances.
FSU trailed 4-0 as the game went into the bottom of the fourth inning, but scored 11 runs in the next five innings to take the game against the Hatters. The Seminoles hit three home runs, with Harrelson, Max Williams and Hunter Carns all leaving the ballpark.
M. Williams was ejected from the game following his home run after he directed strong words towards the Stetson pitcher. He will miss the first game of FSU's series against Louisville.
Harrelson went 2-for-4 with four RBI. His three-run home run tied the game in the bottom of the fourth. It followed the double play he turned in the third inning, where he tracked down a ball in right field, slid to make the catch before he fired to home to catch the Stetson base runner trying to score from third base.
C. Williams had a 2-for-4 day at the plate and added two RBI on a double in the fifth. He recorded four stolen bases and three runs on the basepath. He made a diving catch in left center field in the top of the fifth after he tracked a ball off the bat and quickly covered ground in the outfield to make the grab.
FSU travels to Louisville for a three-game road series against the Cardinals, beginning on Friday.
