We have to go back all the way to “Black 41 Flash Reverse” which is the name of the play Nebraska ran to help #3 Nebraska beat #2 Oklahoma. Crouch ended up catching a 63 yard pass from Mike Stuntz and the rest is history.

That was in 2001.

Well in 2025-2026, Nebraska earned a 17th place finish in the Director’s Cup standings which ties the highest since 2001 and therefore the best Nebraska has done in the Big Ten era.

Nebraska had nine sports finish in the Top 10. Which is impressive just to type on my computer. Six of those teams earned top-five finishes.

Wresting – 3rd
Men’s Gymnastics – 4th
Volleyball – 5th
Softball – 5th
Rifle – 5th
Bowling – 5th

That is impressive and hopefully the Huskers continue to climb the rankings as an Athletic Department. Matt Rhule could sure help them out.

Huskers Match Best Directors’ Cup Finish since 2001
The University of Nebraska Athletic Department continued its climb, earning a 17th place finish in the 2025-26 Division I Learfield Directors’ Cup standings released Thursday morning.

Nebraska finished the year with 929.00 total points, the most points Nebraska has scored in the Big Ten era dating back to 2011-12. The Huskers’ 17th place finish matches the program’s best showing since a 13th place finish in 2000-01.

Under Athletic Director Troy Dannen, Nebraska has posted top-25 finishes in the last three years, the first time that has happened in more than two decades (2000-01 to 2002-03). It also marks the fourth consecutive straight year where Nebraska has improved in the final rankings. In 2021-22, NU was 49th and has steadily improved to 29th, 22nd, 21st and now 17th.

Nebraska, which was 21st in the most recent update following the Women’s College World Series in early June, climbed four spots in the final standings behind strong performances from a trio of spring sports. The Husker baseball team reached the NCAA Tournament and earned 37.5 points while the Husker men’s and women’s track and field teams posted a pair of top-10 finishes and combined for an impressive 183.75 points.

During the year, Nebraska had nine sports post top-10 finishes, including six teams that earned top-five finishes. Those programs included wrestling (third), men’s gymnastics (fourth), volleyball (fifth), softball (fifth), rifle (fifth), bowling (fifth), women’s outdoor track and field (eighth), men’s basketball (ninth) and men’s outdoor track and field (ninth).

Overall, 19 sports are counted in the final DI standings, five of which must be women’s, soccer, volleyball and basketball and men’s basketball and baseball. The next highest (14 max.) sports scored for each institution, regardless of gender, are used in the standings.

Nebraska was one of eight Big Ten teams to finish in the final top-25, joining UCLA (third), USC (seventh), Michigan (ninth), Ohio State (10th), Penn State (21st), Oregon (23rd) and Wisconsin (24th). In all, the SEC and Big Ten accounted for 17 of the top 25 spots with the others coming from the ACC (six), Ivy League (one) and Big 12 (one).

NCAA D-I Cabinet releases statement on age-based eligibility vote, acknowledges lawsuits
In a statement Wednesday, the NCAA Division I Cabinet confirmed the unanimous vote to approve an age-based eligibility model. The group also acknowledged lawsuits as a result of the landmark change.

Legal challenges were expected as the five-to-play-five eligibility model gained steam. After a vote to adopt the age-based rule, a group of 15 athletes filed a legal challenge, On3’s Pete Nakos reported. An Ohio judge denied a temporary restraining order Wednesday, but set a preliminary injunction hearing for next week.

NCAA FBS Oversight Committee proposes new college football transfer portal window
The NCAA Division I FBS Oversight Committee has proposed a new college football transfer portal window among other changes to the calendar. It would change the notification-of-transfer period to a 10-day window on the first business day after Jan. 1.

Under the current model, the notification-of-transfer window is a 15-day period that runs from Jan. 2-16. The timing is after the New Year’s Six bowl games, including quarterfinal matchups during the College Football Playoff. The proposed change would make the portal window open the Monday after the CFP quarterfinals.

Nebraska baseball will open the 2027 season in Arizona
Nebraska is set to open the 2027 season at the College Baseball Series at Surprise Stadium in Surprise, Arizona, on Feb. 19-21, 2027, REV Entertainment announced on Wednesday.

REV Entertainment is partnering with the City of Surprise to host the tournament at the Spring Training home of the Texas Rangers and Kansas City Royals, a facility that has hosted college baseball annually since 2003.

Lions’ Terrion Arnold arrested, faces kidnapping, robbery charges
Detroit Lions cornerback Terrion Arnold is facing multiple felony charges after he was arrested Wednesday in Tampa, Florida, in connection with a robbery and kidnapping in early February.

Tampa police previously arrested six other individuals involved in a targeted armed robbery that took place shortly after midnight on Feb. 4, during which three men were pistol-whipped, held at gunpoint and robbed, according to police.

Al Horford says he’s returning to Warriors to play 20th season
Al Horford plans to return to the Golden State Warriors next season, he told ESPN on Thursday.

Horford, 40, is declining his $6 million player option, with sources telling ESPN that he intends to sign a two-year, $14 million contract to return to the Warriors once free agency begins next month. Horford’s new deal will be fully guaranteed and includes a trade kicker, sources said.
