This weekend marks the end of the first month of the Pioneer Baseball League season, an independent player development and MLB partner league.
Yuba-Sutter’s team, known as the Freebirds in 2026, sits 5-4 entering a weekend set with Long Beach at Bryant Field. It’s the second time the teams have met in May, with Long Beach winning the initial series, 2-1 to open 2026.
Entering the set, the two teams were separated by a game in the PBL standings. Long Beach, managed by Angels and World Series hero Troy Percival and assisted by fellow Angel and UCLA alumnus Troy Glaus, the Coast’s hitting coach, is 6-3 entering Friday’s slate and in fourth place – a game back of 7-2 league leaders Glacier Range, Boise and Billings.
Eddy Pelc leads the Coast and sits top-10 in the league in batting average (.457). The league’s top hitter following Thursday night is Josh Duarte (Yuba-Sutter), who comes in at .515 through nine games.
Long Beach definitely has the power edge on Yuba-Sutter this weekend with two players in the top-10 in the league race for home runs. Paul Winland enters the Marysville series with five home runs – one better than former Yuba-Sutter slugger Cuba Bess (4).
Tyler Stone (Missoula) leads the third leg of the league triple crown with 22 RBI entering the weekend.
Missoula dropped two of three to Yuba-Sutter at Bryant Field in its only trip to the region this summer.
Yuba-Sutter opens next week with a weeklong trip to Modesto to take on the Roadsters (6-3), which sit in a tie with Long Beach for fourth place. Modesto is managed by former Giants’ first baseman JT Snow, who hit behind Barry Bonds and Jeff Kent for years and helped SF to the 2002 World Series against Percival and the Angels.
The Freebirds are back home June 9 to take on RedPocket in a six-game set at Bryant Field in Marysville.
Yuba-Sutter sits seventh in the 12-team PBL in paid attendance (5,718) through nine openings – averaging 636 per contest in 2026.
